Cal Gramling’s VUHS career went from lockdown to center stage

The high school careers of the Class of 2024 may have started under the cloud of the COVID pandemic, but, like many newly minted Vergennes Union High School grads, Calvin Gramling is putting that community experience in the rearview mirror and look ahead.

The 58 graduates recognized at the Vergennes Union High School commencement ceremony last week weren’t all athletes. Nonetheless, they all received a game-day-worthy locker room speech along with their diplomas at graduation this past Friday. 

For almost 50 years now, the maroon gowns, black caps and diplomas have remained a constant for graduating classes at Mount Abraham Union High School.

The challenge in the journey is to persevere with grace, humility and goodwill toward others.

I just had a senior graduate from Middlebury Union High School and I can’t help but take a minute to reflect on how grateful I am for the ACSD community.

On the day before graduation, many Middlebury Union High School seniors got to walk across the stage to accept year-end honors.

Camila Blanco called herself a “typical nervous freshman” when she first crossed the threshold of Middlebury Union High School four years ago.

Patricia McNerney earned Girl Scouting’s highest honor with her project, Outdoor Classroom, the capstone to her Girl Scout experience. She graduated from Mount Abraham Union High School on June 10. 

The Vergennes Union High School Class of 2023 included people who were different in many ways. But the young women and young men who marched across the stage at the June 9 graduation found ways to form a cohesive whole. 

Looking back on her time at Mount Abraham Union High School, 2023 graduate Lily James Roberts said there was a lot she learned from experiences that didn’t take place at a desk or require a pencil and paper. 

Emily Peduto of Brandon, daughter of Anthony and Donna Peduto, is this year’s valedictorian. Abigail Adamsen of Pittsford, daughter of Keith and Lisa Adamsen, is the salutatorian.

It was the end of an era for the Addison Central School District— or at least the conclusion of an eventful decade.
