MAV football gets first victory

The Division II Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative high school football team broke into the win column on Saturday by downing host D-III Fairfax, 21-14.

After an MUHS running back scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, Rutland had a long night when it visited Middlebury’s Doc Collins Field this past Thursday.

Visiting Otter Valley broke away from an early 7-7 tie on Saturday and went on to a 29-7 victory over the Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative football team. 

Bad weather was only part of the problem when Middlebury Union High School hosted Burr & Burton Academy at Doc Collins Field.

Middlebury was the only local victor as the high school football season got underway this past weekend. 

Malcolm became just the fifth Tiger football head coach since 1965, when the legendary 23-year tenure of Hubie Wagner — an MUHS physical education teacher — began.

It seemed Sam knew everybody. He was a visible presence on campus: a robust man physically, warm and expressive. He loved teaching, he loved coaching football, and above all, he loved working with students.

Host Tufts outscored the Middlebury College football team on Saturday, 65-34, in Coach Bob Ritter’s final game as head of the program. 

MUHS played tough to the end of the Division-I final but were vanquished by the Redhawks.
