Letter to the editor: Holmes should be new sheriff

I am writing to endorse Ron Holmes, the best candidate for Sheriff of Addison County. Ron places the importance of good citizenship over showmanship!

The selectboards of at least two Addison County communities have joined the chorus of calls for Addison County Sheriff Peter Newton’s resignation in wake of his arrest last month on two felony sexual assault charges.

I believe with his experience as a deputy for over 20 years he is the best person for the job.

I am a retired Trooper and have worked in and around Law Enforcement for more than a quarter century.

Mike is one of the most honest and genuine people I have ever met. I have never once seen Mike waver from his values in any way.

I hope you will join me in supporting Michael Elmore for Addison County sheriff in the upcoming Aug. 9 Vermont Primary election.

As spouse of a previous, long-term Sheriff, I have a very good understanding of what it takes to be successful in this role.

Holmes has the education and background to do the right thing for the citizens of Addison County.

Addison County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Michael Elmore is hoping area voters on Aug. 9 will give him a big boost toward becoming sheriff.

Middlebury’s Ron Holmes learned a lot about the Addison County Sheriff’s Department during a 25-year run as a part-time deputy there.

Sheriff Peter Newton rebuffed multiple calls for his resignation, including from Addison County High Bailiff Dave Silberman, who’s limited authority includes serving in the sheriff’s stead if that person is in custody.

Lawmakers say legal cloud over Sheriff Newton is too dark and he must resign.
