Editorial: Newton should resign — now

Sheriff Peter Newton, who was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of domestic violence and one count of unlawful restraint, got a partial reprieve by Chittenden County Superior Court Judge John Pacht when the judge allowed him to continue administrative duties as sheriff.

The sheriff is charged with sexual assault, second-degree unlawful restraint and domestic assault; high bailiff calls for Newton to resign.

Addison County Sheriff Peter Newton announced in an online video posted Sunday that he will not run for re-election this year and will retire from law enforcement when his term as sheriff ends next February.

The chief criminal investigator for the Vermont State Police said his agency is investigating a reported “domestic disturbance” at the Middlebury home of Addison County Sheriff Peter Newton in February.
