PHOTOS OF THE WEEK
- CAMP KOOKAMUNGA WRAPPED up its summer season last week with a lunch prepared by Addison County Home Health & Hospice. The kiddos shared their appreciation by making a large thank you poster. This is the seventh year ACHHH has prepared and served lunches for the campers and staff at Camp Kookamunga — the highlight of its summer. ACHHH staff estimates that they served 450 meals last week, while continuing to also work at their “day jobs” at the agency. It takes a village to help with these community service activities and this year Little Village Acres, HOPE, Greg’s Meat Market, Cabot, Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op, Geoff Conrad, Aunt Jane and ACHHH staff all offered assistance. - Visiting the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell this past weekend was like walking through a porthole into the 18th century. The site hosted its annual “Soldiers Atop the Mount” living history event, which brought Revolutionary War re-enactors to the same grounds where a fledgling U.S. Army built fortifications to stop a British invasion in 1777. Pictured clockwise, from the top-left: Three redcoats prepare for a skirmish, U.S. forces load a small cannon for a demonstration firing, a field doctor readies for casualties, a chaplain is on hand for words of comfort, and two U.S. soldiers get ready for the battlefield. - The 11th annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, held Aug. 20-24, showcased more than 100 fabulous films while giving a forum to promising movie makers, comedians and journalists to discuss important cultural topics. New York Times White House and National Security Correspondent David E. Sanger participated in a roundtable discussion.
- VERMONT DOG CAMP founder John Godfrey and a four-legged friend frolic in a local field earlier this week. The New Haven resident takes local dogs outside for off-leash, small-group hikes while their owners are gone during the day. Independent photo/Steve James
- NEW YORK COMEDY star Tina Friml took a break from a national tour last Thursday to appear in her hometown on a Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival panel called “Lies, Truth & Laughs: Comedy as Social Commentary.” She also performed a hilarious comedy set that was well-received. Through her comedy and authenticity, Friml inspires others to develop an identity that is influenced but not defined by their personal challenges. Independent photo/Steve James
- This week it seemed that water couldn’t even find the lip of the falls after a month and a half of extremely dry conditions. Youngsters play on the rocks along the top of the depleted falls. Photo: Sue Leggett
