Boys’ soccer: Tigers, Otters earn wins

In high school boys’ soccer between Oct. 12 and 18, Division II Middlebury claimed a D-I victim, Mount Abraham lost a one-goal game on the road, and Otter Valley won once in three tries. 

Despite plenty of effort on both sides on Saturday, the host Eagle girls’ soccer team and visiting Middlebury settled for a 1-1 tie that was probably fair given of the quality of each team’s play.

The good times rolled for local boys’ high school soccer teams between Oct. 5 and 11, as Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes each won twice, while Otter Valley took two out of three. 

The area’s girls’ soccer teams mostly found the going tough between Oct. 5 and 12, with only Otter Valley pulling out a victory while splitting two games, and Mount Abraham and Vergennes dropping road contests.

Soccer games often come down to one moment where everything clicks. 

In local high school girls’ soccer action between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4, Vergennes and Otter Valley each split two games, while Middlebury and Mount Abraham came up short twice.

Vergennes picked up a big home triumph over rival Mount Abraham to highlight local boys’ soccer action between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4.

In a typically intense high school boys’ soccer game on Tuesday between two programs enjoying a run of success in recent seasons, host Middlebury got past previously unbeaten Vergennes in double overtime, 3-2.

The Middlebury, Vergennes, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley boys’ soccer teams all won at least once between Sept. 21 and 27. 

In a lightly scheduled week for the local high school girls’ soccer teams, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley picked up victories, while Lake Division rival Rice defeated both Middlebury and Vergennes.

In recent local girls’ high school soccer action Mount Abraham picked up its first win, at Middlebury’s expense, while Otter Valley also earned its initial victory.

In recent local high school boys’ soccer action, Middlebury defeated rival Mount Abraham, but came up just short vs. a D-I power; Vergennes won once to stay unbeaten; the Eagles dropped a tough D-I game; and Otter Valley suffered its first setback.

In high school girls’ soccer action between Sept. 7 and 13, Middlebury topped Otter Valley, while Mount Abraham lost to an undefeated Division I team, and Vergennes dropped a pair of contests, one of them a high-scoring shootout. 

In recent high school boys’ soccer action, Middlebury dropped its opener to a Division I team, but bounced back to defeat another D-I side; the Eagles fell on the road in their opener; VUHS coasted in a D-III game; and Otter Valley improved to 2-0.
