Girls’ soccer: Eagles edge Tigers

A dramatic victory by Mount Abraham over Middlebury highlighted local girls’ soccer action between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3. 

In recent high school boys’ soccer play, Middlebury split two games, Mount Abraham earned a tie in two outings, Vergennes picked up a victory, and Otter Valley won once in three away contests.

In a hard-fought girls’ soccer match on this past Saturday, Middlebury outlasted Vergennes in the Commodores’ homecoming game, 2-1.

Middlebury and Mount Abraham each won a pair of games to highlight local high school boys’ soccer play during the past week, while Vergennes dropped two out of three contests and Otter Valley won twice in three outings. 

In recent high school girls’ soccer action, Vergennes picked up a win on the road, Mount Abraham and a Lake Division rival settled for a stalemate, and Otter Valley’s modest winning streak came to a close. 

Local buys soccer teams saw mixed results in the past week. Middlebury tied two games against tough competition, Vergennes lost on the road, and Mount Abraham dropped a home game to a Division I contender.

When former Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer players talk about longtime coach Mike Corey they first look back on their days as kids at Corey’s annual summer camps.

In high school girls’ soccer action during the past week through Tuesday, Vergennes, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley all remained undefeated, while Middlebury was in search of its first victory. 

Each of the four local high school boys’ soccer teams played once between Sept. 6 and 12, with Middlebury, Vergennes and Otter Valley prevailing, while Mount Abraham came up just short. 

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team on this past Saturday hosted Division I Rutland on Fucile Field in a season opener that was both encouraging and frustrating for the Tigers.

The Middlebury College field hockey and men’s soccer teams on Tuesday opened their seasons with one-sided victories, while the Panther women’s soccer team was set to open by hosting Plattsburgh on Wednesday after the deadline for this section. 

In recent girls’ high school soccer action, the Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Otter Valley teams all won their first games of the new season, while Middlebury came up short against a tough opponent on the road.

Host Green Mountain Valley on Sept. 1 prevailed over the Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team, 2-1 in double overtime in the season opener for both teams.
