VUHS girls coast vs. visiting Vikings, 9-1

After three quick strikes into the back of the net from Vergennes Union High School freshman forward Sophia James on Saturday, the visiting Lyndon girls’ soccer team was out of the game. The Vikings, who showed up with just 11 players in steamy weather, weren’t coming back from an 3-0 deficit less than eight minutes after the kickoff.

In recent boys’ soccer action, Mount Abraham earned its initial victory, Vergennes picked up a home tie, and Middlebury dropped a home contest.

In recent local high school girls’ soccer action, Mount Abraham, Middlebury and Otter Valley all won at least once, while Vergennes dropped a pair of games against top competition.

Despite some positive signs from visiting Otter Valley, Tuesday’s girls’ soccer game belonged to host Middlebury from the opening whistle in the Tigers’ 5-0 victory.

In recent local high school boys’ soccer action, Middlebury split a pair of one-sided games, Vergennes lost a close road contest, and Mount Abraham came up short in its season opener.

In recent girls’ soccer action Vergennes remained undefeated, Otter Valley won its opener, Middlebury settled for a tie at an away game, and Mount Abraham was dealt its second one-goal road setback.

It’s a good place to start while trying to win soccer games if a team doesn’t allow a shot on goal, and that’s just what the Mount Abraham girls accomplished against visiting Peoples Academy on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles came away with a 1-0 victory.

The Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team opened on Aug. 30 with a 3-0 victory over visiting Lake Division rival Green Mountain Valley.

As the local high school girls’ soccer season opened, Vergennes won its first two games, Middlebury claimed its opener, and Mount Abraham dropped a close road game to a traditional rival. 

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team opened its 2024 campaign this past Saturday with a 4-2 loss at Division I foe Rutland. 

The new boys’ soccer coach at Middlebury Union High School knows his away around the Lake Division, the league in which the Tigers compete during the regular season. 

Solstice Binder, who will be a junior at Middlebury Union High School, made the Olympic Development Program East regional team.

The new Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer coach is a 1997 graduate who wore Eagle maroon while playing for storied coach Mike Corey and has extensive youth soccer coaching experience.

Seven local high school boys’ soccer players were named to the Division II or III All-State Teams, and another 23 earned recognition from either the Lake Division or the Southern Vermont League B Division.
