College buys land to build affordable housing in Middlebury

One hundred units of workforce housing will be built on land close to downtown Middlebury.

Finding candidate families for the next home remains difficult even as Vermont’s and Addison County’s lack of affordable and workforce housing continues to make headlines.

John Graham Housing & Services is planning a $5 million overhaul of several of its affordable housing projects in Vergennes, Middlebury and Bristol.

The housing news was great in Addison County in 2021. Great, that is, if you were a residential property seller and had somewhere already lined up for your next move.

A pair of nonprofit housing organizations are nearing the financing and regulatory finish lines on a project that would add 20 units of affordable housing in a place they’re badly needed: Bristol.

Advocates for the low-income population stressed that simply leveraging hotel beds in times of crisis wouldn’t compensate for the area’s lack of affordable housing.

A new report from the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) demonstrates strong demand for affordable workforce housing in the county.
