Tornado touches down in Addison
ADDISON — An EF-1 tornado touched down in Addison on Monday night, July 18, a rare occurrence for the Green Mountain State. Tornado warnings had been issued in New Hampshire and Maine that evening, but not in Vermont.
The tornado began around 6:50 p.m., developing about a half mile southwest of the intersection of Routes 22A and 17. The National Weather Service estimates the tornado was on the ground for one mile and reached peak wind speeds of 90mph.
Lasting approximately two minutes, the tornado moved half a mile northeast across Route 22A and caused damage to multiple trees surrounding the Lakeview Cemetery. The tornado also damaged property at a Route 22A residence, destroying a canopy and causing a metal outbuilding to collapse.
Addison resident Wendy Bruso sent in these photos of a destroyed canopy on their deck, and a metal outbuilding that was crushed by the wind. Bruso also said their boat had been parallel to a car in the driveway and was moved several yards away and ended up perpendicular to it, but unharmed. Additional damage was done to a structure on King Hill Road.
