Eagle, Otter girls’ basketball to host playoff games

ADDISON COUNTY — As expected, the Mount Abraham and Otter Valley girls’ basketball teams will open the postseason high school play-offs with home games, while Middlebury and Vergennes will begin the playoffs on the road.

The Vermont Principals’ Association on Monday seeded the 12-8 Eagles No. 6 in Division II, and they will host No. 11 Hartford (8-11) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.

If the Eagles prevail they will almost certainly recognize their quarterfinal foe on Friday at 7 p.m. — No. 3 Fair Haven (15-5) is likely to be waiting for them. The Eagles and Slaters split two early-season contests.

The 11-9 Otters earned the No. 6 seed in D-III and will host No. 11 Oxbow (7-13) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Those teams also did not square off this winter. If the Otters prevail they would probably travel to meet No. 3 Lake Region (11-6), another unknown quantity, on Saturday at 3 p.m.

VUHS (7-11) received the No. 9 seed in D-III and will hit the road to face No. 8 Fairfax (9-10) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Those two teams do know each other: On Feb. 7 the Commodores defeated the host Bullets, 41-34. If VUHS prevails again, then No. 1 Windsor (17-2) will await on Friday. The teams did not meet this year, but the Commodores upset them in the 2021 playoffs.

Finally, the 8-12 Tigers drew the No. 10 seed in D-II and will visit No. 7 Harwood (11-9) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Highlanders defeated the Tigers at home this season, 43-34. If the Tigers reverse that outcome they would take on another familiar foe on Friday, No. 2 Enosburg (17-2). MUHS played Enosburg tough twice in losses this season, once in overtime.
