WHITING/CORNWALL — Vermont State Police are looking for the 19-year-old Whiting man to help them figure out how someone ended up in his truck leading them on a 100-mile-per-hour chase through Whiting and Cornwall after midnight on Saturday.
On Aug. 29 at 12:31 a.m. a trooper saw a 2003 Ford truck race by on Route 30 in Whiting, headed north at a high rate of speed. The officer clocked the truck at 86 mph in a posted 50 mph zone, activated his blue lights and took off after the vehicle.
Trooper Sean Hauter reports that the truck led him on a chase in which speeds reached 100 mph. The pursuit continued up Route 30 into Cornwall, across Clark Road, south on Route 74, and south onto South Bingham Street, were Hauter discontinued the chase because of the high speed and reckless driving.
Eventually, state police located the vehicle on South Bingham Street near Cutting Hill Road in Cornwall, where it had collided with a tree, sustaining major contact damage. Whoever was in the truck had run away, but they had left several containers of alcohol in and around the vehicle. Troopers tried to track the driver of the truck with a K-9 but were not successful.
Police said the registered owner of the truck was a 19-year-old Whiting man, and that the truck had not been reported stolen.
