Solons oust Tiger boys’ basketball
MONTPELIER — No. 3 Montpelier defeated the visiting No. 6 Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team, 72-59, in a Division II quarterfinal.
The Solons improved to 18-3, while the Tigers completed another winning season at 12-10.
Jonah Cattaneo led Montpelier with 26 points, and Ben Gambill added 15 points.
Tyler Buxton excelled in his last game for the Tigers with 21 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Karic Riche and Maxwell Alberts, the latter just back from an injury, contributed 10 points apiece.
In a Wednesday first-round game the Tiger ousted No. 11 Lamoille, 66-58. The 10-11 Lancers erased the Tigers’ 35-26 halftime advantage to take a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but Coach John Howe said “strong defense and a few heads-up plays” allowed the Tigers to prevail.
Buxton sparked MUHS with 31 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, and three assists, and classmate Tim Goettelmann added 10 points and five steals. Junior Gabe Dunn contributed eight points and seven assists for the Tigers.
