VUHS track competes in second meet
BURLINGTON — A victory by the boys’ four-by-400-meter relay team highlighted the efforts of the Vergennes Union High School indoor track team on Saturday at the University of Vermont.
The Commodores picked up fewer victories than the previous week, according to Coach Brad Castillo, because officials inadvertently treated VUHS like a club team instead of a Division II varsity program. As a result, the Commodores competed against Division I programs, and, while they held their own, won less often.
The 4×400 relay team of Ben Huston, Gabe Praamsma, Xander DeBlois and Julio Quiles posted a time of 3:47.52 to edge South Burlington by less than a second.
Huston took second in the boys’ 1,000, and the boys’ 4×800 team also earned a second-place finish. Quiles took third at 300 meters.
The full VUHS boys’ results were:
• 55 meters: 9. Quiles, 7.09; 31. DeBlois, 7.66; 75. Adam Galuszka, 8.66.
• 300: 3. Quiles, 38.62; 11. DeBlois, 41.96; 75. Galuszka, 50:53.
• 1,000: 2. Huston, 2:47.26; 8. Erich Reitz, 2:59.77; 10. Kai Williams, 3:06.41; 21. Chris Therrien, 3:30.36.
• 1,500: 7. Praamsma, 4:40.07; 15. Williams, 4:58.79; 19. Therrien, 5:13.71.
• 4×800: 2. VUHS, 8:57.77 (Reitz, Williams, Praamsma, Huston).
For the VUHS girls, Sydney Weber and Audrey Tembreull both ran the 55 meters; Weber was 25th in 8.74 and Tembreull was 31st in 8.85. Tembreull took 19th in the 300 in 52.38.
Two Mount Abraham independents ran in the girls’ 55: Sadie Tarks and Abigail Sturtevant were 29th and 46th in 8.80 and 9.54, respectively.
The next meet is set for UVM on this Saturday at 10 a.m.
