Mount Abe girls’ soccer overcomes Commodores

The Division II Mount Abraham girls’ soccer team achieved its main objectives on Tuesday at Vergennes, playing crisply, passing the ball and defending well, and coming away with a 3-1 victory.

The most successful teams at Vergennes Union High School in 2023 were arguably cross country and girls’ soccer, with the former taking fifth in Division II and the latter winning a playoff game for the first time in four years.

Cross-country runners from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes competed at this past Saturday’s season-opening Essex Invitational meet, which drew high school competitors from all Vermont divisions.

The Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team opened on Aug. 30 with a 3-0 victory over visiting Lake Division rival Green Mountain Valley.

Top-seeded Thetford held off the No. 9 Vergennes Union High School baseball team, 5-2, on Saturday in a Division III quarterfinal. 

Vergennes Union athletes won two races and placed in five more events at the Division III track and field championship meet, held on Thursday, May 30, at Fair Haven Union High School. 

Winning performances by Tiger junior sprinter Jazmyn Hurley and one Tiger and two Vergennes relay teams highlighted local high school teams’ efforts at a Wednesday, May 15, track and field meet the Middlebury Union team hosted at Middlebury College.

The Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls’ lacrosse team got goals from six players and defeated host St. Johnsbury on Saturday, 13-6.

The spring of 2023 had to be rated a success for the Vergennes sports teams. 

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative girls’ lacrosse team opened its season by defeating fellow Division II school Stowe, then lost to a D-I title contender.

The Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team was awarded the No. 5 seed in Division III and won one playoff game at home before coming up short in a defensive battle in a quarterfinal on the road.

The host Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team erupted in Tuesday’s second quarter to take charge against Middlebury in what can be fairly called a surprisingly one-sided 55-31 win over the Commodores’ regional rival. 

The Vergennes Union High School boys ran to victory in two events and took second in two more to finish third as a team in Division II at Saturday’s indoor track and field state championship meet at the University of Vermont.
