Two wins and a tie for local baseball openers

The Commodores and Tigers both got their first wins of the season, and the Eagles nabbed a tie.

MUHS defeated Spaulding, 24-16, and VUHS lost to Richford, 23-11.

The Eagles, Commodores and Tigers all had top 5 finishers at their opening meets this week.

With three wrestlers ruling their weight classes, the host Vergennes Union High School wrestling team earned the best finish among local schools competing at Saturday’s Commodore Invitational Tournament.

In a high school girls’ basketball game that was close throughout, visiting Mount Abraham ratcheted up the intensity of its man-to-man defense Tuesday evening to finally pull away from host Vergennes in the final few minutes and claim a 45-39 victory.

In a typically hard-fought duel on Saturday between the rivals, the host Eagles earned a 2-0 victory over the Commodores in what was the final regular season game for both squads.

The Division II Mount Abraham girls’ soccer team achieved its main objectives on Tuesday at Vergennes, playing crisply, passing the ball and defending well, and coming away with a 3-1 victory.
