VUHS boys, MUHS girls excel in races

RANDOLPH CENTER — The Vergennes boys and Middlebury girls fared best on Saturday at the Randolph High School Invitational Cross Country Meet, hosted by Randolph at Vermont Technical College. Athletes had to contend with cool, damp and breezy conditions, with a light drizzle throughout both races. 
The VUHS boys, led by Ben Huston’s sixth-place effort out of 174 competitors, finished fourth with 129 points. The Commodores trailed Hanover, N.H., (39), St. Albans (63) and Colchester (124) in the 14-team field.
MUHS, led by Nat McVeigh in 16th, took sixth with 172 points, and Noah Engvall led the eight-place Eagles (243) with a 32nd-place effort. Otter Valley did not send enough varsity runners to score; Joseph Cijka finished 53rd for OV.
With Mary Ann Eastman finishing ninth, the Tiger girls took fifth place out of 11 teams with 106 points. Hanover (64) edged Harwood (73) for first. 
The Eagles finished 11th with 259. Ruby Jean Hall finished 43rd for the Eagles. Kelsey Adams’ 68th-place finish led three Otters in the field of 139.
