Letter to the editor: Don’t move the 6th-graders

It was encouraging to hear board members at a recent meeting of the Mt. Abraham Unified School District express skepticism of the proposal to move 6th grade students to the Mt. Abe Middle School/High School.

The Mount Abraham girls’ basketball team started and finished strong against visiting Montpelier on Tuesday, and that was enough for the Eagles to get past both the Solons and a few of their own mid-game struggles in a 40-30 victory.

Up in Bristol the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams will both be looking to build on recent successful seasons, while the wrestling squad can find good reason for optimism with an encouraging influx of youth. 

The Mount Abraham Unified School District Board in 2024 could begin considering whether to expand the district’s middle school to include sixth-graders, a step that’s been taken by other school districts in the county. 

Student athletes at Mount Abraham Union High School recently completed the first year that the sport of volleyball has been played at the Bristol school. 

The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team, the number 8 seed in the Division II playoffs, had defeated Lake Division foe Rice — the No. 9 seed —  twice during the regular season, 2-0 and 2-1. But on Oct. 25, the visiting Green Knights won the … (read more)

Top-seeded Hartford eliminated the No. 8 Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team from the Division II postseason on Oct. 27, 8-1, in a quarterfinal matchup. 

Maybe it was harder than it could have been given the Mount Abraham field hockey team’s dominance in possession and 19-2 advantage in penalty corners, but the 8th-seeded Eagles were all smiles after their 1-0 victory over visiting No. 9 Brattleboro in Tue … (read more)

The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team scored early and often in Tuesday’s home game on the way to an 8-1 victory over visiting local rival Vergennes. 

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team survived a scoreless first half in which host Mount Abraham had several golden opportunities, and then the Tigers rode three second-half goals from senior striker Eddie Fallis to a 3-1 victory over their … (read more)

Tiger boys’ cross-country team held off runners from Burr & Burton, VUHS and Mount Abe in a meet in Middlebury on Friday. The Tiger girls had the race winner but lost the team scoring.

Among those openings is a new director of safety that would support school leadership with hazing, harassment and bullying investigations and act as the Title IX Coordinator for the district, along with other responsibilities. 

Soggy conditions didn’t slow down Middlebury runners noticeably at a cross-country meet hosted by the Mount Abraham Union High School team on Tuesday afternoon. 

Across the board, it should be an entertaining and interesting fall for sports teams at Mount Abraham. 

Visiting Otter Valley broke away from an early 7-7 tie on Saturday and went on to a 29-7 victory over the Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative football team.
