Letter to the editor: Multi-sided school closure coverage appreciated

Thank you for continuing your in-depth coverage of the issues surrounding the dwindling population and the need for school closures.

I especially appreciated David Sharpe’s concern for equity in the recent article “What does ‘local control’ Mean?” He said, “What we are saying that is very distressful for me is that relatively wealthy communities that have placed a high value on education are opting out.”

I attended several Zoom meetings before the Weybridge School vote. I learned that Weybridge is one of the wealthiest towns as determined by the percentage of students eligible for free lunch.

It saddened me to have to vote; I did not like either choice. But the plan to send Weybridge students to Mary Hogan was not unreasonable. I believed Weybridge kids would continue to do well wherever they were. However, it seemed to me that the rest of the district would clearly suffer if Weybridge were to opt out. In the end I felt loyalty to the district and to the greater good.

I do believe in public schools, and also in the importance of addressing issues of equity. Thank you reporters, for helping us look at all sides of a complicated dilemma.
