Area museums receive history grants

FERRISBURGH — Two Ferrisburgh institutions, Rokeby Museum and Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, were among the 22 organizations in Vermont, New York and Quebec to receive grants from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership (CVNHP). The grants are given to organizations that promote and protect Champlain Valley history. Smuggling, bootlegging and moonshining are among the many stories of the Champlain Valley’s past that will be highlighted by the 22 new projects. The grants will support work to showcase local history, conserve museum collections and support internships in museums and libraries. The new projects will cover all aspects of the region’s cultural and natural heritage.

Rokeby’s grant of $4,000 will help fund a project for students in grades 9-12 in Rokeby’s home school district to develop new outdoor interpretive signage and trail infrastructure upgrades to the museum’s cultural and natural history interpretive trail “How Does a Farm Become a Forest?”

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s “Destroy the Cargo!” will be a new exhibit and digital interactive experience showcasing the important role that Lake Champlain played in smuggling alcohol from Canada into the United States on Lake Champlain during federal Prohibition. CVNHP awarded the museum $7,500 toward the project.
