Vermont State Police Log: Troopers respond to domestic violence, impaired driving
ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police, between March 2 and 10, quieted a few domestic violence situations and cited a couple drivers for operating their vehicles while impaired.
On March 7 around 10:30 p.m. troopers responded to a family fight at a Hillside Drive home in Starksboro. Police said they determined that Colby M. Bevins, 28, of Huntington had caused bodily injury to a family member, though he wasn’t on the scene when police arrived. Troopers found Bevins on March 8, took him into custody, and cited him for domestic assault.
The next day, Sunday, March 9, at a little after 2 p.m., troopers were notified of a family disturbance at a home on Route 7 in Leicester. After investigating, police took 79-year-old Wayne Hutchins of Leicester into custody without incident and transported to the New Haven state police barracks, cited him for domestic assault, and lodged him at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility with bail set at $200.
State police were called to Leicester a second time on March 9. At around 20 minutes after 11 p.m. troopers responded to a family fight at a home on Leicester Whiting Road and determined that Gary R. Atwood, 23, of Leicester had caused bodily injury to a household member. They cited Atwood for domestic assault and lodged him at the jail in Rutland for lack of $200 bail.
While on scene, troopers also spoke with a witness, Daniel C. Wiles, 23, of Brandon, and police observed indicators of impairment. They cited Wiles for refusing to take a drunk driving test.
The first driving under the influence (DUI) citation came on March 2. A little after 9:30 p.m. that Sunday, troopers rushed do a report of a one-car crash on Shoreham Depot Road, near Dame Road, in Shoreham. Police said the driver, Gabriel Cousino, 23, of Bridport, was unharmed; the 2005 Chevy Silverado he was piloting sustained minor damage. They cited Cousino for DUI.
Separately, on March 10 at around 1 p.m., troopers stopped a car on Route 7 near the intersection with New Haven Road in Ferrisburgh. They said that the driver, identified as 75-year-old Charles Visi of Milton, appeared to be impaired. Visi was screened, placed under arrest and transported to the Vergennes Police Department for a drug influence evaluation. Then they took Visi to Porter Medical Center to provide an evidentiary blood sample. Ultimately, they cited Visi for driving under the influence of drugs.
Meanwhile, on Monday, March 10, at 9:22 a.m., troopers responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Routes 22A and 7 in Ferrisburgh. Police report that a Connecticut driver was stopped at a red light in the northbound lane of Route 22A, when a northbound Chevy Tahoe driven by Kevin Higgs, 47, of Lake Hopatcong, N.J., rear-ended the stopped car. No one was hurt, but both vehicles sustained damage. Police issued Higgs a ticked for following too closely, which carries a $220 fine and 3 points on his license. Troopers were assisted on scene by the Vergennes Fire Department.
