Vermont State Police Log: Three injured after alleged drunk driver crashes on icy road
ADDISON COUNTY — Three young men were injured — two quite seriously — when an alleged drunken driver crashed on an icy road in Bridport this past Saturday evening.
Vermont State Police report that Noah Quesnel, 22, of Middlebury, was driving a 2011 white BMW 328I on a gravel stretch of Happy Valley Road at a speed that troopers described as excessive for the icy conditions that existed during the evening of Feb. 22, when the accident occurred.
Police said Quesnel and his two passengers were injured. A passenger identified as Adrian Mal Pica Fuentes, 30, of Bridport, along with Quesnel, suffered severe injuries and were taken to UVM Medical Center for treatment. The other passenger, an 18-year-old man whose name wasn’t released, sustained moderate injuries and was treated at Porter Medical Center.
Police cited Quesnel for driving under the influence, excessive speed and negligent driving.
State police were assisted by Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, Middlebury Regional EMS and Bridport Volunteer Rescue Squad.
State police dealt with other crashes during the past week:
First, on Feb. 20 at 8:21 a.m., police got a report of a two-vehicle crash at the railroad crossing on Old Jerusalem Road in Leicester.
Police report that Derek Underwood, 60, of Franconia, N.H., was driving a 2009 Sterling L9500 Series truck — one that could drive on a highway or on railroad tracks — northbound, in reverse, on the tracks in Leicester. At the same time, Stephen Henty, 58, of Cornwall, was driving a t 2014 Ford F-250 pickup eastbound on Old Jerusalem Road.
The railroad truck failed to trigger the railroad signal and Henty’s pickup entered the crossing, police said. The rear end of the railroad truck struck the passenger’s side of the pickup, police said. No injuries were reported, though Henty’s vehicle was considered a total loss.
Police found the railroad signal was functioning properly after the crash. The reason for the malfunction prior to the crash is under investigation.
Separately, on Feb. 23 at around 11:30 a.m., troopers went to the scene of a crash on Route 17 near Old Gravel Lane in Starksboro. The driver, identified as 45-year-old Benjamin Hanf of Starksboro, was unhurt. Police cited Hanf for driving under the influence.
In other recent activity, troopers:
- On Feb. 19 at around 12:23 a.m., saw a motor vehicle violation on Route 7 near Dakin Road in Ferrisburgh, pulled over the car and identified the driver as Xin S. Jin, 36, who did not offer a permanent address. Police cited Jin for six offenses, including condition of vehicle, misuse of number plates, persons required to register, obstructing windshields, operating after suspension/revocation/refusal, and operating without a license.
Altogether, the fines would add up to $1,060 and two points on his license, if they are assessed at the maximum, according to police.
- On Feb. 19 at around 2:30 p.m., responded to a report that a vehicle had stuck in a snowbank on States Prison Hollow Road near Route 116 in Starksboro. Police allege Emil North, 23, of Starksboro was driving with a criminally suspended license and in violation of his court-ordered conditions of release. That evening, North is alleged to have called 911 numerous times threatening to inflict injury on troopers and members of the community. On Feb. 21, troopers found North, arrested him, and took him to Middlebury to be arraigned for violation of conditions of release, disorderly conduct by telephone and driving with a criminally suspended license.
After his arrest, troopers said they discovered North had driven his vehicle in a separate instance with a criminally suspended license and in violation of his court-ordered conditions of release, and they cited him for those violations, too. He was already in custody at the Addison County courthouse waiting to be arraigned.
- On Feb. 21 at around 10:20 p.m., went to the scene of a one-car crash on Hopkins Road in Panton. Police reported that Ryan Delisle, 31, of Panton, had driven his vehicle off the north shoulder of the roadway and into a guardrail. Vergennes fire, EMS, and police departments assisted on scene.
Delisle was taken to UVM Medical Center for suspected minor injuries, according to police, who cited Delisle for driving under the influence, second offense.
- On Feb. 24 at around 6:30 p.m., responded to a home on Lazy Brook Drive in Starksboro. Police alleged that William A. Little, 58, of Starksboro, caused an injury to a household member and then left the scene. Police found Little at another home, arrested him, took him to the New Haven barracks and cited him for second-degree aggravated domestic assault.
