Field set for ACSD, Middlebury elections
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents will see only one contested election on their May 4 Town Meeting Day ballot: A five-person race for three of the community’s seats on the Addison Central School District board.
As previously reported, five three-year terms will be up for grabs on the 13-member ACSD board, which oversees public education for preK-12 students in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. Three of the seats in play this year belong to Middlebury, along with one seat each for Ripton and Weybridge.
Candidates had until the end of the business day on Monday to file the needed paperwork to run for Town Meeting Day contests for municipal and school board posts.
Based on paperwork filed with local town clerks:
• The race for the three expiring Middlebury ACSD board terms will include incumbents Brian Bauer and Steve Orzech, along with residents Vance Bishop, Ron Makleff and Jess Venable-Novak.
The third of the Middlebury incumbents, James “Chip” Malcolm, won’t seek reelection.
• Former Ripton School District board Chair Steve Cash is running unopposed for his town’s lone seat on the ACSD board, which is being vacated by incumbent Joanna Doria.
• Incumbent Jamie McCallum, Weybridge’s lone representative on the ACSD board, is seeking reelection unopposed.
The Independent has already reported on the incumbent candidates’ priorities for the next three years. The paper will reach out to Bishop, Makleff, Venable-Novak and Cash for their views on the issues heading into the March 4 election.
Note that all ACSD board candidates run at-large in the seven-town district. This means residents of all seven ACSD towns vote in elections for board members, not just residents of the town that the seat represents.
The rest of Middlebury’s March 4 ballot is devoid of suspense.
There are three candidates for three vacancies on the town selectboard. Barring a successful write-in campaign, incumbent Selectpersons Isabel Gogarty and Andy Hooper are headed to new three-year terms, as is first-time candidate Megan James.
Further down on the Middlebury ballot, Natasha Sen and Dianne Lawson have no competition for three-year spots on the Ilsley Public Library board; Susan Shashok is headed for another year as town moderator; and Beth Dow is headed for another three-year term as lister.
