Vermont State Police Log: Whiting man faces felony charges, traffic tickets

ADDISON COUNTY — A Whiting man faces some serious felony charges, as well as traffic tickets, after Vermont State Police stopped the car he was driving late Friday night.

Just before 11 p.m. on Dec. 27, troopers observed a motor vehicle violation on Route 7 near Lotsawater Road in Salisbury and stopped the car. Police observed several indicators of impairment of the driver, identified as Carson P. Bertrand, 20. They screened Bertrand for driving under the influence, arrested him, and cited him for driving under the influence of drugs.

The next day, with a search warrant in hand, troopers went through Bertrand’s vehicle and found cocaine. They cited him for possession of the drug.

Police also issued tickets for driving a vehicle in bad condition, failing to display a front license plate, driving a vehicle without an up-to-date inspection, and driving with an open container.

Bertrand is due to answer the charges in court on Feb. 3.

Separately, as reported in last week’s edition, state police responded to a one-car crash on Route 22A near Carrs Lane in Bridport at around 11:30 a.m. on the morning of Dec. 23.

Seventy-eight-year-old Mark Axelrod and 76-year-old Francine Axelrod of River Edge, N.J., were both killed in the crash. Their 2015 Chevy Impala gradually left the southbound lane, struck a telephone pole, and overturned. Both occupants of the care were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Neither speed nor impairment are expected to be contributing factors at this time, though the police investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any relevant information is asked to call the New Haven barracks at 802-388-4919 or leave an anonymous tip online at vsp.vermont.gov/prevention/tipsubmit.
