Woman critically injured in early morning Middlebury fire

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury woman was critically injured in an early morning fire on Washington Street on Thursday.

Middlebury firefighters, police and ambulance staff were dispatched to a house fire at 46 Washington St. (a yellow house between High Street and Seminary Street Extension) at around 1:02 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.

First responders found the house ablaze and a group of people standing outside. Occupants of the house evacuated upon discovering the fire and, while doing so, told police that they found a female resident on the floor, injured. They were able to pull the woman outside to safety.

Middlebury Regional EMS took the woman to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. As of late this morning, the woman, whom police did not identify by name, was reported to be in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported from the fire scene.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
