Vermont State Police Log: Man called police more than 300 times
ADDISON COUNTY — Police have been getting a lot of phone calls from Cormick M. Cantwell, 41, of Middlebury, and they say it was too many.
On July 23, Vermont State Police, assisted by the Middlebury Police Department, cited Cantwell for disturbing the peace by use of a telephone. State police allege that from May 13 through July 23 Cantwell called and harassed both state and local police dispatchers. During this period, Cantwell called and harassed the dispatch centers a total of 334 times, police said.
In a separate case, state police reported two recent encounters with Andrew R. Malzac, 31, of Middlebury. First, on July 15 at around a quarter after 11 p.m., state police attempted to stop a car after an observed motor vehicle violation on Washington Street Extension near the intersection with Colonial Drive in Middlebury. The vehicle failed to stop despite the emergency lights and siren, increasing its speed and continuing northeast on Washington Street Extension. Troopers did not pursue the vehicle.
Police were able to identify Malzac as the driver.
Then, on July 18 at 12:50 a.m. state police stopped a car on Weybridge Road in Middlebury and identified the driver as Malzac. Troopers detected indicators of impairment, took Malzac into custody and cited him for driving under the influence and for violating court ordered conditions of release.
Because he resisted, troopers also cited Malzac for resisting arrest.
Going back to the July 15 incident, police cited Malzac for eluding police.
Troopers were assisted by members of the Middlebury Police Department.
Meanwhile, state police in the second half of July responded to two separate traffic crashes that sent people to the hospital.
In the first, on July 18 at a little before 5 p.m., troopers went to the site of a crash on Route 22A near Cross Road in Bridport.
Police report that 18-year-old Subash Tamang of Bridport was driving a 2017 Chrysler 300 sedan northbound on the state highway when the car crossed the centerline and attempted to pass multiple vehicles in the northbound lane. The Chrysler left the road on the southbound shoulder, struck a tree and crashed onto the southbound shoulder of Route 22A. All five occupants of the car were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
The car was a total loss. Traffic tickets are pending.
Troopers were assisted by members of the Bridport Fire Department, Middlebury Regional EMS, and CDR Towing.
The second bad crash came on July 23 on Route 17 in Starksboro. Police said that at a little after 4 p.m. that Tuesday, Jordan Pike, 26, of Bristol was driving a CFMOTO 450NK motorcycle eastbound on Route 17 when she rounded a corner and struck a guardrail. Pike was thrown from the bike and suffered critical injuries. She was airlifted to UVM Medical Center for life threatening injuries.
In other recent activity, troopers:
- On July 15 announced that they had cited Adbullah Darcin, 32, of Ferrisburgh with driving negligently and speeding. State police report that on June 18 at a little after 11:30 p.m. troopers got a call about a one-car crash on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh. Police alleged that Darcin had been driving his motor vehicle at 70 mph in a 40 mph zone, and subsequently crashed the vehicle.
- On July 16 at around 12:30 a.m. saw a motor vehicle violation on Court Street near Rogers Road in Middlebury and stopped the car. Police cited Ryan P. Prim, 25, of Bristol for violating court ordered conditions of release, driving with a criminally suspended license and driving without a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.
- On July 17 at approximately 4:12 p.m. responded to a reported citizen dispute at a home on Ripton Road in Lincoln. Police said that Calvin C. Joos, 28, of Burlington came to the home of 64-year-old Timothy M. Brokaw and physically assaulted him after Brokaw told Joos to leave the property. Troopers cited Joos for aggravated assault and unlawful trespass.
- On July 19 at a little after 1 p.m. responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Cross Road near Route 30 in Cornwall. Police said that Richard Quesnel, 39 of Salisbury was mowing the edges of the road on a farm tractor when the tractor struck a utility pole, causing the wires to fall. Police cited Quesnel for driving with a criminally suspended license and without a required an ignition interlock device.
Troopers were assisted on scene by members of the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, Middlebury Regional EMS and Cornwall Fire Department.
- On July 19 at a quarter to 8 p.m. went to Ten Acre Campground in Addison on a report of an intoxicated man who was trespassing. Police arrested Donald F. McDaid, 65, of Palm Coast, Fla., and cited him for unlawful trespassing and driving under the influence. When McDaid resisted troopers and used obscene language, they also cited him for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
- On July 21 shortly after 10 a.m. got a report of a vandalism at the intersection of Route 53 and Route 7 in Salisbury. It was discovered someone had painted a swastika and a racial slur on the roadway using black spray paint. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the New Haven state police barracks at 802- 388-4919 or leave an anonymous tip online at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
- On July 27 at 9:40 p.m. stopped a motor vehicle on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh. They cited Ivan Tighe, 44, of Burlington for driving under the influence.
- On July 29 at 10 p.m. logged a report of a possible family fight in the Maple Street area of New Haven. While at the address, police said they found that Danielle Hemmingway, 49, of New Haven had furnished alcohol to several people under the age of 21. Police cited Hemmingway for furnishing alcohol to a minor.
