Vergennes Champs split swim meets
VERGENNES — Before this Tuesday’s friendly rivalry meet with the Middlebury Marlins, the Vergennes Champs split two Champlain Valley Swim League outings last week, defeating visiting Essex on July 11, 360-122, but coming up short at St. Albans on July 9, 268-223.
The Champs cruised from start to finish against Essex on the 11th, rolling up a 14-5 edge in the relay races. Eleven Vergennes swimmers won multiple races, led by Savannah Wallace, Connor Husk and Brantley Cooke with four victories apiece.
Earning three wins each were Riker Cooley and Scarlet Giroux, and Acadia Clark, Ella Bearor, Noah Smits, Jordan Hutchins, Ella Brooks and Will Clark each won twice.
The Champs were somewhat shorthanded vs. St. Albans two days earlier, understandably as some swimmers took advantage of an opportunity to attend a Jason Mraz concert at the Shelburne Museum. The visiting Sharks took advantage to win 14 of 19 relays, piling up a 63-point edge there that translated into more than their winning margin.
Wallace, Cooke and Smits paced the Champs with three wins apiece, and Hutchins, Bearor, Khanlen Ouimette, Adrienne Smits and Evan Angier each prevailed twice.
Note: Uncooperative weather led to the postponement of the Marlins-Champs meet. It has been rescheduled to this coming Tuesday.
