Highlanders go to OT to oust Tiger girls’ hockey

WATERBURY — Harwood’s Louisa Thomsen’s third goal of the game came in the second overtime period and pushed the No. 4 Highlander girls’ hockey team past No. 5 Middlebury, 3-2, in Wednesday’s Division II quarterfinal.

The 11-9-1 Highlanders also got a 40-save performance from goalie Jordan Hunter in ousting the Tigers from the postseason. Harwood advanced to meet No. 1 Woodstock (18-1) in the semifinal round.

Thomsen gave Harwood a 2-0 lead entering the third period, but the Tigers forced overtime with power-play goals from Avery Gale and Erin Mulcahy in the final 15 minutes.

MUHS goalie Ruby Hubbell made 28 saves as the Tigers finished at 9-12.

Tide rolls over Tigers boys’ basketball team

BARRE — High-powered No. 3 seed Spaulding eliminated the No. 14 Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team from the Division II playoffs on Wednesday, 89-37. The Tide improved to 18-2.

Spaulding’s Tavarius Vance finished with 16 points, Grady Chase chipped in 12 points, and Cooper Diego added 11 points. Spaulding led by 22-5 after one quarter and 44-17 at halftime

Penn Riney (11 points) and Jack Trudeau (nine) led MUHS, which concluded its season at 4-17.

Eagle girls’ hoop wins & heads to title game

BARRE — The Mount Abraham girls’ basketball team defeated Enosburg in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night in a Division II semifinal at the Barre Auditorium.

The 16-8 Eagles advanced to meet No. 4 Spaulding (18-4) in the championship game on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. back at the Aud. Mount Abe is seeking the program’s first title since 2018.

After Wedneday’s 52-48 win, Mount Abe Coach Connie LaRose told the Eagles:

“I’m so proud of them.”
