Letter to the editor: Independence is important in oversight of police

I am writing to endorse Dave Silberman for High Bailiff. The role of High Bailiff is to provide oversight to the sheriff’s department, to ensure that office is not above the law. Such civilian oversight over law enforcement is so important for preventing any possible misconduct and abuse. If the High Bailiff is also a member of the law enforcement community, independent oversight is impossible. Dave is running to put the sheriff’s office under this kind of objective, independent, civilian oversight.
I’ve known Dave for several years, and have been impressed by his intelligence, his dedication to the rights of all Vermonters, and as an advocate for criminal justice reform. He helped organize free expungement clinics in Addison County to help people clear their old records to get a fresh start. As a member of the Vermont Democratic Committee, he helped re-write the party platform to focus on providing equal justice for all Vermonters. He serves as a Justice of the Peace and member of the Middlebury Board of Civil Authority.
I heartily endorse Dave Silberman for High Bailiff, and hope you will too.
