In girls’ hoop: Tigers, Mt. Abe take home wins

EAGLE SENIOR GUARD Chloe Johnston ducks under the defense of Otter Valley seniors Julia Eastman, left, and Leah Pinkowski during Mount Abraham’s home victory on Thursday night. Johnston led the Eagles with 12 points and added 10 rebounds.

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high girls’ basketball play last week, Mount Abraham won twice, once over Otter Valley, to move over .500; Vergennes lost a close road game; and Middlebury cruised to a home victory.
EAGLES – OTTERS
On Thursday the host Eagles pulled away in the second half to defeat the Otters, 48-27. Mount Abe led at the half by just 18-13, but broke loose for 30 points in the second half behind a balanced attack and aggressive defense. Chloe Johnston (12 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, six steals) and Grace Harvey (seven points, 11 rebounds, eight steals) led a team-wide Eagle effort.
Livia Bernhardt (nine points) and Alice Keith (eight) led the attack for the Otters, who fell to 1-3. OV will host MUHS on Tuesday.
On Saturday the 3-2 Eagles won their third straight, topping visiting Division I South Burlington, 39-28. The Eagles led at the half by 22-14 and clinched the victory by outscoring the Wolves by 11-4 in the third period. Johnston (13 points, 10 steals) and Harvey (12 points, 10 rebounds) did the most to fill up Mount Abe’s stat sheet. The Eagles will host U-32 on Tuesday.
COMMODORES
On Thursday host Lamoille rallied past the Commodores, 44-40. VUHS led, 31-28 entering the final quarter before the Lancers took charge behind Heidi Tinker, who finished with 23 points.
Emily Rooney (12 points) and Felicia Poirier (11) paced the Commodores, who took their second straight tight loss to open the season. The Commodores’ Saturday home game vs. Hazen was called off. The Commodores visit Missisquoi on Wednesday and will host Middlebury on Friday.
TIGERS
On Thursday host Missisquoi defeated the Tigers, 43-30. MVU took a 30-12 halftime lead, but the Tigers fought back in the second half. Elle Sellers led MUHS with 13 points.
On Saturday the Tigers pulled away from a nine-point halftime advantage to top visiting Randolph, 52-30. Cady Pitner scored 16 to lead MUHS, and Annie Andrus and Ivy Doran chipped in eight points apiece as MUHS improved to 2-2.
