MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded, along with Middlebury firefighters, to a reported fire at the banks of the Otter Creek near the Marble Works property off Maple Street on Monday, Aug. 26.
Police said the fire damaged a homeless encampment. Police said no one was injured and they are investigating the case as a potential arson fire.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Broke up a loud argument between two people off Maple Street on Aug. 26.
• Separated two feuding men on the town green on Aug. 26.
• Received a report on Aug. 26 about a man who had allegedly been harassing and stalking a local woman. The case remains under investigation.
• Removed an unwanted person from a South Village Green apartment on Aug. 26.
• Assisted Middlebury College officials in removing a homeless person who had been on campus on Aug. 27.
• Responded to a report of people drinking inside a vehicle parked off East Main Street on Aug. 27.
• Investigated a trespassing complaint at a Case Street home on Aug. 27.
• Took a drunken Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) bus passenger to receive detox services in Burlington on Aug. 27.
• Checked the welfare of a North Pleasant Street resident on Aug. 27. Police determined a resident at the home needed an ambulance.
• Responded to a reported dispute among some Case Street neighbors on Aug. 28.
• Investigated a report of a purse that had been taken from The Centre shopping plaza on Aug. 28. Police said the purse was later returned to the owner, minus some cash.
• Responded to a report of an out-of-control juvenile at a Valley View residence on Aug. 29.
• Assisted Mary Hogan Elementary School staff with a student who had left campus on Aug. 29.
• Received a report about a drunken man allegedly harassing people on the ACTR bus as it was making its way from Middlebury to Vergennes on Aug. 29.
• Cited Victor Pomainville, 18, of Middlebury for driving under the influence, following a traffic stop on Court Street on Aug. 30. Police said Pomainville declined to submit to a breath test.
• Assisted state officials in investigating a stolen car report on Route 7 south on Aug. 29. Police said Vermont State Police ultimately caught and detained a suspect near Foster Motors after having diverted traffic around the incident for several minutes.
• Investigated a report of a fight in the McDonald’s Restaurant parking lot on Aug. 30. Police said it was a verbal dispute.
• Cited Gary Lussier-Thompson, 25, of Middlebury for driving under the influence, following an investigation on Court Street on Aug. 30. Police said they measured Lussier-Thompson’s blood-alcohol content at 0.38 percent; the legal limit is 0.08.
• Were informed a bike had been stolen from the yard of a Lower Plains Road home on Aug. 31.
• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS at the scene of a bicycle accident on Court Street on Aug. 31.
• Responded to an illegal dumping complaint on Exchange Street on Aug. 31.
• Investigated a one-vehicle accident on Middle Road South on Aug. 31. Police said the lone occupant of the vehicle sustained minor injuries in the rollover.
• Were informed of the theft of a bike from an open garage on South Main Street on Aug. 31.
• Investigated a report of a patient with a gunshot would at Porter Hospital on Aug. 31. Police determined the man had injured himself while at a shooting range.
• Were asked to check on a homeless woman who had sought refuge in the ATM vestibule at the Vermont Federal Credit Union on Aug. 31. Police directed the woman to the warming shelter on North Pleasant Street.
• Responded to a reported dispute between Mister Ups Restaurant staff and a guest on Aug. 31.
• Responded to a noise complaint in the Sarah’s Way neighborhood on Sept. 1. Police told a resident to turn down their music.
