Ways of Seeing: The Roods' presence graced their town

Posted on January 25, 2018 |
By Alice Leeds

The year is 1991. Burnham Hall is packed. A small grey-haired woman wanders onstage in hiking boots and khakis, binoculars glued to her eyes, peering intently into the audience. Following close behind is a similarly dressed small gentleman. “Has anyone out there seen a bluebird?” he questions the audience as his partner continues peering about, both improvising the opening scene in our elementary school performance, one of my first as a teacher at Lincoln Community School.

Wanted. Person or persons to collaborate on planning a spectacular May 3rd 2018 Green Up Day in Middlebury!

Green Up Day celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and our unique state custom should be celebrated with pomp, circumstance and green bags stuffed with trash from Middlebury’s roadsides, fields and impromptu dump sites.

Letter to the editor: Security is a key part of Mount Abe plan

Posted on January 25, 2018 |
By Denise Dalton

What are tandem classrooms? An online search reveals this term is mostly used to describe an academic process of co-teaching. Tandem classrooms, as the term is used at Mt. Abraham, are a physical stacking of one classroom in front of another. The only way to reach the second classroom is by passing through the first. Tandem classrooms are also those that are separated by a retractable curtain/wall for flexibility in classroom size. Logistically speaking, neither of these solutions are conducive to focused learning.

Victor Nuovo: Two-party system in serious jeopardy

Posted on January 25, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism and the two-party system.

The 2016 presidential election has been described as an epochal moment in American history, a turning point, although where our nation is headed seems uncertain. After the stunning defeat of the Democratic candidate and her party, pundits pronounced liberalism dead. But liberalism is the heart and soul of the Democratic Party; so, if liberalism is dead, so is the Democratic Party.

Letter to the editor: Rail bridges project continues to raise questions

Posted on January 22, 2018 |
By Ian Ross

I am writing in response to some articles written in recent weeks with regards to the Middlebury Railroad project. First I read in another Letter to the Editor that part of the project plan is to take excavated contaminated soil and pile it at another location near Wright Park before it ultimately gets taken to the site for managing such soil. If this is in fact part of the plan, I am completely repulsed by it.

On Nov. 19, 2017, the Middlebury Friends Meeting (Quakers) approved the following statement in support of the Energy Independent Vermont Coalition whose aim is to decrease the use of fossil fuels by Vermonters:

“As Friends, we carry a concern for the life of all species and for justice to the poor of the Earth in the face of the destructive effects of climate change. We are concerned to find ways that our society can act to mitigate the dangerous and unequal effects of climate change, through acting locally and globally.

Letter to the editor: Coyote hunting counterproductive

Posted on January 22, 2018 |
By Anna Rose Benson

Until this year, the annual mass killing of coyotes called the Coyote Derby was a long weekend of killing coyotes, making piles of their bodies and getting money for the biggest pile. Most of the bodies were dumped somewhere afterward.

The annual Coyote Derby was stopped by citizen protest and legislative action, so this year the entire month of February has been designated as Kill Coyotes Month.

One of the reasons people give for killing coyotes is that it helps the deer population.

Letter to the editor: President issues a MEGA problem

Posted on January 22, 2018 |
By Alec Lyall

“I am not vulgar and deranged. It just looks like I am.” Commander in chief-Presidents commonly have their intelligence questioned and less frequently question their intelligence. Skipping the pettiness of mentioning names, the absurd has been normalized, providing cover for disgusting, shameful behavior that would expel an adolescent from grammar school.
