Letter to the editor: The word 'immigrant' doesn't apply to all Americans

Posted on February 16, 2017 |
By Emily Joselson

In a recent article about the “community conversations” Rev. Andrew Nagy-Benson and I are helping to organize, I used the phrase “We are all immigrants,” to discuss this Sunday’s panel devoted to a better understanding of Islam in America today.

Several kind friends have shared with me that that phrase inadvertently ignores the reality that native people are not immigrants, nor are those who were brought here by violence and against their will. I am continuing to learn the power of language to shape our conversations!

Letter to the editor: Scott did not collaborate on budget

Posted on February 13, 2017 |
By Spencer Putnam

Governor Scott proposed a radical change to Vermont’s education funding system as the centerpiece of his state budget plan for the coming fiscal year. His request to freeze education spending and put off school budget votes until May would have put school boards in an impossible position. Rep. Dave Sharpe, in his guest editorial in your edition of Feb. 2, laid out a strong case for rejecting the governor’s proposal, and now the legislature has done so.

Letter to the editor: U.S. must learn from the history of refugee crises

Posted on February 13, 2017 |
By Michele Lowy

Editor’s note: This was sent to President Trump

Dear Mr. President, I am writing in response to your executive order barring refugees from Muslim countries. I am a first generation American born child of European Jewish refugees.

Rep. Fred Baser reviews start to legislature

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Rep. Fred Baser R-Bristol

The governor’s budget address sets the tone for a new legislative session. Gov. Scott’s message raised a few eyebrows. So did Treasurer Beth Pearce’s proposal to fund Act 64, the Clean Water Act. A few other items that have caught peoples’ attention early on, including a $15 per hour minimum wage and legalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Eric Davis: Judgeship remains political football

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Eric Davis

According to the indicators traditionally used to assess judicial nominees, Neil Gorsuch is highly qualified to sit on the United States Supreme Court. He has degrees from Columbia, Harvard and Oxford, a record of scholarly publications, more than 10 years of experience as a federal appeals court judge, and a temperament that is characterized by both intellectual curiosity and unfailingly polite and respectful treatment of his judicial colleagues, as well as lawyers and litigants appearing before his court.

Ways of Seeing: Kate Gridley, All must stay focused on truth

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Kate Gridley

The days are getting longer.

I relish the lengthening light for painting in the studio. A late afternoon slant invites reverence: at the end of Trump’s first week in office, when the sun managed to stripe beneath a dark cloud in the west to light the ice on the trees, I realized I needed to look out the window more often and take a deep breath.

And yet —

The days (and, I am afraid, the nights too) feel darker than any I have known in my sixty-year span as I witness the chaos unleashed by the new administration in Washington.

Gregory Dennis: Trump in store for a rough ride

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

There’s said to be an old Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times.” We are certainly living in interesting times with Donald Trump.

I almost wrote “under Donald Trump.”

But the evidence has mounted in the chaotic three weeks of this administration of incompetent revolutionaries. And one thing is increasingly clear: While we will be living with Trump for several years to come, we don’t have to see ourselves as living under him or his rule.

Letter to the editor: Immigration ban not right

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Anya Schwartz

Oh dear.

So much to say about Trump’s executive orders banning Syrian refugees, etc. Simply, though, it just ain’t right.

I’ll find better words and better methods to welcome and celebrate people of all faiths and nationalities as my neighbors.

And if I don’t, why, I’ll just keep repeating, it just ain’t right. Beats saying nothing.

Letter to the editor: Havurah pans Trump order

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Sarit Katzew

Havurah, the Addison County Jewish Congregation, is profoundly troubled by the anti-immigrant and anti-refugee rhetoric and action coming from the Trump administration. Many of our families came to this country as refugees or immigrants, fleeing persecution and terror, just as refugees are today.

We believe that America is — and must remain — a land of freedom and opportunity for ALL people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender or LGBTQ identity. We must unite and stand up for these principles, despite our differences.
