Hospice agencies are combining services

MIDDLEBURY — Two of Addison County’s most renowned providers of hospice-related programs are joining forces under a single banner: “End of Life Services Inc.”

This impending merger of Hospice Volunteer Services (HVS) and Addison Respite Care Home Ltd. (ARCH) is expected to result in better coordination of services to area residents in the final stages of their lives and their families.

And officials added the consolidation will likely spawn new initiatives to benefit those in hospice care and the loved ones who will mourn them.

Maggie Gyllenhaal comes to Middlebury for film screening

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival is hosting a special screening of the compelling drama “The Kindergarten Teacher” on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m., as part its MNFF 2018/19 Winter/Spring Screening Series at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. The film’s star, Maggie Gyllenhaal, will appear at Town Hall Theater for a Q&A session following the screening. The Q&A will be moderated by Gyllenhaal’s husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard.

Police provide additional details on MUMS shooting investigation

MIDDLEBURY — After two Middlebury Union Middle School students were detained on suspicion that they were planning to shoot another student, and possibly others, Middlebury police held a press conference on Wednesday morning to give more details on the case and field questions from the statewide media.

Here were the main takeaways from that conference, led by Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley and Detective Kris Bowdish, who was the lead investigator:

Solid waste station at Routes 7/22A up in the air

FERRISBURGH — The potential sale of a 34.91-acre parcel of town-owned Ferrisburgh land to the Addison County Solid Waste Management District, which is interested in using the parcel at the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A as a transfer station to serve northwestern Addison County, is currently in limbo.

Input sought on Monkton town office

MONKTON — The facts are pretty straightforward: Neither the Monkton town office nor the town’s Russell Memorial Library has a source of potable water. Both buildings are energy hogs. The parking situation stinks.

In theory, the solution to these problems is also pretty straightforward: Build new facilities. In practice, however, things get rather more complicated — Monkton voters have three times defeated building proposals.

Marikate Kelly named to Monkton selectboard

MONKTON — After a brief search, the Monkton selectboard appointed longtime resident Marikate Kelley to fill an open seat vacated by Rodger Parker, who resigned from the board last month.

“For now I’m just getting my feet wet,” Kelley said after Monday’s meeting. “This is a great town and a great group of people, and I want to be of service to my community.”

Two official meetings in, she added with a grin, “I haven’t changed my mind about that.”
