Late last summer, I was chatting with Lynn and Mike McKenna in front of the Middlebury Market about the woes of the Red Sox, who were headed for last place, limping to a miserable finish.
They were waxing enthusiastic about Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava, their favorite player.
Nava is a most unlikely major-leaguer. The Red Sox plucked him from independent ball in 2008 after playing for the Chico Outlaws of the Golden Baseball League in California. The Red Sox paid the Outlaws $1.00 (that’s right — one dollar) for the rights to sign him.
VERGENNES — A passerby alerting Vergennes police to a possible case of animal abuse led to their May 22 arrest of a Ferrisburgh man for driving under the influence, second offense.
Vergennes police said on that Wednesday a motorist called them to say he had seen a man throwing a dog in the back of a pickup truck, and that the man had an open container of alcohol.
BRISTOL — Bristol police last week announced that on May 23 they arrested Jill Ryea, 21, of Leicester and charged her with the sale of cocaine following an extensive joint operation with Vergennes police, Vermont State Police operating out of the New Haven barracks and the Addison County Sheriff’s Department
Acting on information regarding drug sales, Bristol and Vergennes police officers purchased cocaine from Ryea, Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs alleged in a press release.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed of the theft of a purse, wallet, laptop and iPhone from a vehicle parked on East Main Street on May 20.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Broke up a dispute between some Seminary Street neighbors on May 20.
• Assisted a local resident who on May 20 reported the theft of four snow tires, with rims.
• Received a report that a youth had used his hand to smash through a window at the Middlebury College Ridgeline Road housing on May 21.

BRANDON — The last of three Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) research study clinics will be held this Wednesday, May 29, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Whiting Town Hall.
The first two clinics, held in April and early May at the Brandon Senior Center and Sudbury Town Hall, were well attended. A total of 316 volunteers have donated blood samples that will be tested for antibodies to EEE.

CORNWALL — Vermont Gas Services Inc. on Friday unveiled a natural gas pipeline route through Cornwall that it believes will comply with the community’s town plan and setback requirements while creating taxable infrastructure. Company officials said the pipeline would pour an estimated $240,000 into the municipal coffers during its first year of operation while allowing a limited number of local tie-ins.
VERGENNES — While Vergennes nears a deal with Encore Redevelopment for a 150-kilowatt solar array near its city sewer plant, the Burlington firm has told the Ferrisburgh selectboard that further research showed its proposal for a 500-kw array on town-owned land was not feasible.
In Vergennes, aldermen and Encore could sign a deal as soon as this week for an array that could save the city at least $4,000 a year off its power bill for the next two decades.
