LINCOLN — It’s past the time of year that most Addison County residents keep their ears peeled for important Town Meeting Day news, but Lincoln residents will return to Burnham Hall in the coming weeks for another round of discussion, debate and voting on municipal matters.

State seeks volunteers for EEE research

BURLINGTON — The Vermont Department of Health is calling for volunteers to participate in a research study that will test blood samples from residents living in Brandon, Sudbury and Whiting for antibodies to the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus.

The Health Department wants to learn if many people have been infected with EEE virusbut did not get sick. Individual test results will not be shared with participants. All information collected during the study will be confidential.

Bixby to host talk on fractured fairy tales

VERGENNES — Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes will present “Exploring the Rabbit Hole of Fractured Fairy Tales” on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. Bixby Assistant Librarian Dianne Lawson will discuss how fairy tales became fractured, how they are defined, how they are passed down, and whether they are relevant today.

Board seeks voter OK for $600,000 to fix VUHS roof

VERGENNES — Residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns will be asked in a district-wide May 14 vote to support a five-year, $600,000 loan to put a new roof on the leaky Vergennes Union High School classroom wing and auditorium.

In Vergennes, balloting will coincide with the city council’s request for a $1.45 million bond to build a new North Main Street police station, and school and city officials are looking at holding a joint informational meeting, possibly on May 7.

Senate begins debate on search and rescue bill

MONTPELIER — When Vermont Senate Government Operations Committee chair Sen. Jeannette White, D-Windham, opened a hearing on H.182, the Search and Rescue Bill, last Wednesday she gave a nod toward Carol Ault and Kathy Duclos, who were seated in the cramped hearing room.

The two women are aunts of Levi Duclos, the 19-year-old New Haven man whose death while hiking in January 2012 launched public demand for a change in search and rescue procedures.

Watch out for Lyme disease in pets

VERMONT — If you’ve ever seen a tick — especially if it is on you or your pet friend — you’ll never forget it. As if ticks were not bad enough, these bloodsuckers can also transmit serious diseases. While Lyme disease is fairly well known in humans, not everyone is aware of how it can affect our dogs. April has been designated National Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs month by the Lyme Disease Foundation.

Ferrisburgh farmer and baker Erik Andrus has a slightly different take on it: “How does our food get to us?”

Long ago waterways, not roads, were the backbone of the Northeast’s regional food system. After decades of reliance on roads and automobiles to get foods to market, Andrus is taking a journey back in time.

VUHS trio headed to Girls' State

VERGENNES — The Vergennes American Legion Auxiliary has selected three junior girls from Vergennes Union High School to attend Green Mountain Girls’ State this year. The Auxiliary will sponsor Taylor Paquette, Phoebe Plank and Samara Sausville as they spend the week of June 16 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.
