ADDISON — Vermont State Police are investigating the Feb. 15 burglary of a home on Jersey Street in Addison during which the culprit stole a variety of personal property, including items with the State of Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife insignia. Police said the stolen items — a Deputy F&W badge, collar brass and a tie clip — belong to one of the victims, Deputy Warden Eugene Stearns.
The total value of the stolen property is estimated at $8,000, according to police.
SHOREHAM — Raj Peter Bhatka’s argument that his proposed whiskey distillery should be considered a farm operation does not hold water and therefore should be subject to Act 250 review as a commercial enterprise, according to a recent opinion issued by District 9 Environmental Commission Coordinator Jeffrey Green.
And the reason Green believes Bhatka’s argument doesn’t hold water is because the whiskey he would make will hold a lot of water.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 10 will be asked to approve a 2013-2014 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $6,418,788, reflecting a 4.46-percent increase in spending that would preserve current programs and beef up science, technology, engineering and math instruction.
The proposed budget does not include a second-language (Spanish) program that the ID-4 school board has been discussing for the past few years. The board elected to take a pass on such a program, at an estimated cost of $144,671, in favor of a greater focus on math and sciences.
MONTPELIER — Legislation introduced last week in the Vermont House by Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, and two colleagues is intended to make it more difficult for those responsible for the many recent burglaries in Addison County and Vermont to dispose of stolen goods.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Authorities on Friday arrested an Alaska man accused of shooting and killing a Vergennes native and another Coast Guard employee at a communications station on Kodiak Island, Alaska, last spring, the U.S. attorney said.
James Michael Wells, 61, of Kodiak is accused in a federal murder complaint of killing Petty Officer 1st Class James Hopkins, of Vergennes, and retired Chief Boatswain’s Mate Richard Belisle on April 12, 2012.
The arrested man worked with the victims, a Coast Guard spokeswoman confirmed.
MIDDLEBURY — Those who happened past the Middlebury town green at noon on Valentine’s Day may have noticed an unusual sight: around 30 women holding signs, dancing, singing and speaking out. It was part of One Billion Rising, an event hosted by WomenSafe in solidarity with gatherings around the world that day to raise awareness about violence against women.

FERRISBURGH — About three months after the offer was first made, the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Feb. 5 voted unanimously to sign a letter of intent with Burlington firm Encore Redevelopment that could pave the way for a solar array on town-owned land.
Encore officials believe that a lease deal for a parcel at the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A could put almost $500,000 in Ferrisburgh’s coffers over the next two decades.
