Selectmen seek funds for Middlebury bridge

October 4, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen have hired a consulting team to uncover creative financing options for a new in-town bridge project that officials hope could be built before the end of this decade.

The consulting team of RKG Associates and McFarland-Johnson will spend the coming weeks looking at revenue sources to finance as much as $10 million of the estimated $16 million price tag of the project. The project would involve building a new bridge linking Main Street to Court Street via Cross Street, across the Otter Creek in downtown Middlebury.

If things go as scheduled, selectmen will have financing information in hand — along with some recommendations — in time for the 2008 town meeting next March.

“We really have as a goal to get something done within the next couple of years,” said Selectman Dean George, chairman of Middlebury’s in-town bridge committee. “We know that’s ambitious.”

Monkton nurse cares for Iraq detainees

October 4, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MONKTON — It was only 18 months ago that Monkton resident Caitlyn Bushey was hitting the books at Plymouth State University, preparing herself for a career in nursing.

Last month saw Bushey return from a military stint in Iraq during which she saw more catastrophic injuries in one year as a combat medic than she may see during her entire career as a hospital nurse.

Bushey, now 21, signed up with the New Hampshire National Guard soon after graduating from Mount Abraham Union High School in 2004. She saw the Guard as an opportunity to serve her country while receiving tuition reimbursement at Plymouth State.

“I saw it as the best of both worlds,” Bushey said.

She joined the 3643rd Ordinance Co. based in Concord, N.H.

Burmese students fear for friends and family

October 4, 2007

By MEGAN JAMES

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College junior Yan Oak has spent the past few weeks struggling to communicate with friends in his hometown of Rangoon, Burma. The military-run government, which refers to the country as Myanmar, had cut off phone lines and severed Internet connections in response to recent protests sparked by a 100-percent increase in fuel prices.

But Yan managed to get through, and has been able to keep a close eye on the action as his friends join thousands of protestors and monks in the largest demonstration against the country’s military junta since a popular uprising in 1988.

In an effort to do something here in Vermont, half way around the world, Yan and fellow Burmese student Htar Htar Yu organized a series of events this week, including a panel discussion about the current state of Burma. The students have spent each day in the lobby of the college library answering questions about their home country and giving away red t-shirts that say, “Free Burma,” to spread awareness.
