MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team took charge in the second quarter of Thursday’s game against visiting rival Mount Abraham on the way to a solid 44-32 win.

The 8-4 Tigers have won six of eight and stand in third place in Division II. Included in their wins have been several games where they have not clicked offensively, but have managed to prevail with tough defense and key plays.

Junior center and tri-captain Nicole Brown said the Tigers’ formula for success has been their focus and their faith in one another.

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team pulled away in the final 12 minutes of Tuesday’s home game to earn a 41-30 win over Springfield.

The victory moved the Otters, who are sixth in the Division II standings, back over .500 at 6-5. More importantly, said senior forward Amanda Sanderson, who sparked OV with 14 rebounds, eight points, four assists and strong defense, the Otters needed to bounce back from last week’s 60-37 loss at Windsor in which they did not play well down the stretch.

VERGENNES — Visiting Middlebury outlasted an improving Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team, 37-32, on Friday in a defensive struggle that was ultimately decided on the foul line and in the turnover column.

On a night when neither team shot well, the Commodores committed more fouls in their man-to-man defense and full-court press than did the Tigers, who most of the time sat back in a zone. As a result, the Tigers went to the line 36 times, sinking 18 shots, while VUHS made seven of 12 attempts. And the Commodores lost the ball 32 times, compared to 22 turnovers for MUHS.

ADDISON COUNTY — The year 2009 saw Otters win the area’s only team title, Tigers migrate to Division II, Panthers cement their national emergence in a new sport, and Eagles reach their traditional aerie in Centennial Field only to be evicted. A prominent local team not named after a member of the animal kingdom also made news, as a squadron of Commodores sailed back to Barre before being sunk by Cosmos.
