Letter to the Editor: Bottle deposit increase urged

Posted on April 17, 2017 |
By Alice Grau

Editor’s note: The writer asked us to publish this letter that she sent to Vermont Gob. Phil Scott.

Dear Gov. Scott,

Once again I am out picking up roadside trash for Green Up Day. The vast majority of the litter is beverage containers (Twisted Tea seems to be edging out Bud Light in our area) on which the 5-cent deposit is an insufficient deterrent. The amount of the deposit has not changed since it was instituted in the 1970s.

Letter to the Editor: Trump and Ryan became victims of their own hubris

Posted on April 17, 2017 |
By Larry Booker

Several millennia ago, when the ancient Greeks still worshipped their gods — Zeus, Apollo, Athene and the other Olympians — the mortals were warned not to defy the gods, or demonstrate inflated pride against them. This was called hubris, and several mortals did, in fact, defy the gods and they suffered from their bloated pride. Oedipus was one of them.

Letter to the Editor: Homeward Bound benefits from many volunteers

Posted on April 17, 2017 |
By Jessica Danyow

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week April 23-29, I am humbled to take the opportunity to recognize the many individuals in Addison County who give their time, skills, resources, and energy to Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society. This organization was founded by volunteers and throughout our 41 years of operation, they have been key to advancing our message, educating our community, and caring for our animals.

Editorial: Giving up on 'best' solution?

Posted on April 13, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

When is it too late to sound the alarm? That question comes to mind with Middlebury resident Ben Wilson’s community forum concerning the rail bridges project in downtown Middlebury. He advocates scrapping the state’s $52 million plan, painstakingly assembled over the past three years, in favor of an easterly rail bypass.

Editorial: How easily we are deceived

By Angelo S. Lynn

A week ago, Trump deflected the political dialogue from his administration’s shady connections to Russia’s meddling in the U.S. elections (and a too cozy relationship Russian President Vladimir Putin) by dropping a few bombs in Syria. While the tactic violated everything Trump had said on the campaign trail that he would not do, and was against the very actions he warned President Obama not to take, it worked. At least, temporarily.

Community Forum: Rail bypass, bike path is the way to go

Posted on April 13, 2017 |
By Ben Wilson

This week’s writer is Ben Wilson of Middlebury, former president of the Better Middlebury Partnership.

The $52 million plan to construct new rail bridges in downtown Middlebury should be scrapped. The project is fraught with safety, economic, and environmental issues that will devastate Middlebury’s business and tourism community. Furthermore, after a four-year construction debacle VTrans will leave the town with an expensive piece of infrastructure that will not solve key safety and environmental issues.

Jessie Raymond: Airport turnstiles present epic challenge for new 'business traveler'

Posted on April 13, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

A couple of weeks ago, I flew to Chicago for a work-related conference. For once, I got to swagger around the airports like an actual business traveler.

Unfortunately, the swagger only lasted until my colleague and I — yes, I said “colleague,” because business travelers talk that way — landed at O’Hare. While she carried a small bag, I had checked a bulky wheeled behemoth that fell just a few pounds short of needing to be registered with the DMV.
