Letters to the Editor: Vermont regulations overburden childcare providers

Posted on October 16, 2017 |
By Renee Mosier

I was pleased to see a discussion of inadequate childcare in Addison County on Oct. 9th’s front page, and even more pleased to learn of the forum that had taken place with childcare experts, educators, and legislatures to discuss this important issue that challenges so many families. However, there was no mention of what seems to be the most obvious challenge of late for child care providers: the nearly 100 pages of licensing regulations for home-based child care providers that were dropped on providers last year by the Department for Children and Families.

Jessie Raymond, Around the Bend: Parental warnings have big impact

Posted on October 12, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

Every time I make toast, a memory comes back to me: that of my father saying, “If your bread gets stuck in the toaster, never try to pry it out with a fork. You’ll get electrocuted.”

My toast usually pops up unassisted, thus giving me no cause to go fishing around in the toaster slot with any metal utensils. But the fork-in-the-toaster warning made an impression that has dogged me, perhaps more than any other parental declaration, my entire life. Even now, I freak out if my bagel won’t eject properly.

Letters to the Editor: Vermont's iconic symbols missing

Posted on October 12, 2017 |
By Jean Murphy

I recently spent a week in Middlebury and had a fine time. “Draw Me a Story” at the Sheldon Museum was a delight, and I discovered creemees! I was especially charmed by the hidden flower garden behind the public library; it’s a beautiful, well-kept place to sit in the shade on a sunny afternoon.

As we move toward the commemoration day known as Veterans Day and Armistice Day, I want to point out an omission in many of our remembrances: the horses that lost their lives in wartime.

Letters to the Editor: Facts revealing in gun debate

Posted on October 12, 2017 |
By Tony Bates

In the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, the same tired arguments are trotted out by both sides. Gun control advocates want more restrictions on gun ownership and think the only reason 58 people were killed is because Congress doesn’t stand up to the NRA. The other side claims that any more gun laws will create a slippery slope and erode our Second Amendment rights.

There are several facts to be considered that I don’t see mentioned in the media, including this newspaper. But even a cursory internet search will verify.

Ways of Seeing, Nichols: A kind wish can make a person's day

Posted on October 12, 2017 |
By Johanna Nichols

Many times during the week, your transactions may be punctuated with: Have a great day! (Move on! There’s a line behind you.) This cliché has crept into our language, replacing “thank you for shopping with us” or “good afternoon.” Where did this phrase come from? According to Wikipedia, in the 1970s, the American supermarket chain Kmart opened a store in Brisbane, Australia. The workers were trained to say, “Thank you for shopping at K-Mart. Have a nice day.”
