Opinion: Selectboard ignored petition

Posted on June 18, 2015 |
By Richard and Isabelle Terk

Disregard for the concerns of citizens and taxpayers of Middlebury was very evident by the majority of the Middlebury Board of Selectmen at the June 9 meeting. MANA (Middlebury Airport Neighbors Association) provided a petition including over 200 signatures of Middlebury residents to the board which was completely ignored in favor of a vote to approve the VTrans proposal to expand the airport.

Opinion: Airport serves the entire town

Posted on June 18, 2015 |
By Frank Punderson

I learned to fly at the Middlebury Airport in the mid-50s when it was a grass field and Alphonse Quesnel ran Dustaire, a crop-dusting operation.

Reflecting the growth of Addison County these past 60 years, the airport has evolved, and in keeping pace with the needs of the community is planning further upgrades.

Editorial: A practical call by Shumlin

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the week after Gov. Peter Shumlin’s surprise announcement that he would not seek a fourth term for governor, you could characterize the reactions in two camps: those who thought he made the decision because he didn’t want to lose what would be a tough contest, and those who were surprised he didn’t fight for a fourth term to cement his legacy on several key issues.

More women should pursue careers as VSP troopers

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By Haley Boise

Currently, about 10 percent of the Vermont State Police is made up of female troopers. While that’s a higher percentage than any other state police agency in New England, it’s still a very low number. The issue is this: There simply aren’t many females interested in the job. I conducted a survey at Mount Abraham Union High School and found that out of the 36 females who responded, 25 of them were either not interested in the job or didn’t know enough about it.

Student athlete concussion tests should be required

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By Tyrus Keith

Studies have shown that concussions can potentially lead to brain aneurysms, Alzheimer’s disease, depression that can lead to suicide, and other permanent damage to the brain. Awareness of long-term brain injury is evident through the NFL’s decision this year to compensate retired football players who have shown symptoms of such brain damage. Therefore, in youth sports concussion baseline tests need to be mandatory for all athletes.

It's time to stop telling people what they can't do

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By James Quaglino

I don’t know about you, but I am tired, tired of people telling me what to do, what to eat, what to drive, what I can or can’t own, what I can or can’t say. I am tired of people complaining about this great country and trying to bring it down.

If you don’t like salt, don’t use it.

If you don’t like sugar, don’t use it.

If you don’t like soda, don’t drink it.

If you don’t like meat, don’t eat it.

Democrat hopefuls for President should make pledge

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By Samuel I. Fogel

Open letter to all Democratic candidates:

Everyone knows or should know that electing a good president with good policies and good intentions is not enough, unless it is accompanied by electing a good Congress and a good Senate that favors the candidate’s good policies and good intentions.

Clippings: A double shot of pride for parents

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By John Flowers

We buried my father more than two decades ago, and my memories of him are sadly growing more faint by the year. But I will always remember the emphasis he placed on getting a college degree — not only as a ticket to better employment, but also as a means by which to grow intellectually and socially before setting out into the world.
