Editorial: Tough questions for three towns demand thorough discussion

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

We won’t get into the weeds of local board decisions, but perhaps a few questions and observations will help community members shape upcoming discussions about some crucial town issues. Those issues affect the Mount Abraham Union school district, where building committee members have proposed a $35 million bond to renovate the high school; in Orwell, where that community has rejected merging with the Fair Haven Union School district under Act 46; and Middlebury taxpayers and patrons of Ilsley Library where board members have proposed a $9.6 million expansion.

Letters to the Editor: Coverage of lake gets high marks

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Bill McKibben

Many thanks for the truly comprehensive coverage of the ongoing cleanup efforts on Lake Champlain. While it is a shame to see the chaotic Trump administration threatening longstanding work, it is useful for all of us to know the details.

I note that in the same issue Victor Nuovo explains that the philosopher Spinoza insisted that “the peace and piety of a society depends entirely” on the “freedom to publish one’s thoughts and discoveries.” It seems to me the Addison Independent is pulling its weight and more in this regard.

Letters to the Editor: Sports column a joy to read

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Stephen L. Harris

Karl Lindholm's article on the great black baseball player, Spottswood Poles, captures a time when African Americans had to fight on two fronts — one at home against racial discrimination and the other on the bloody battlefields of the Western Front in World War I, ironically, to keep the world safe for democracy. Karl's scholarship on black baseball players is a treasure. Thanks, Karl.

Letters to the Editor: Trapping ban is long overdue

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Holly Tippett

Protect our Wildlife opposes a petition by trappers that seeks to extend the season in which otter can be killed in inhumane body-gripping traps for their pelts. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has proposed a rule that would grant the trappers’ request, yet the department has still not provided adequate justification for their support of the proposal.

Victor Nuovo: Truth and the foundations of civil society

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Introducing John Locke: Truth and the foundation of a civil society

“Its theme is the intellect, or the understanding or mind… in which Locke enquires about how the human mind works, how it gathers all of its content… and, above all, how it goes about searching after truth.”

– On Locke’s book, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding

Editor’s note: This is the 19th in a series of essays by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought.

Ways of Seeing, Kate Gridley: Music without words speaks loudly

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Kate Gridley

I have been thinking a lot lately about music, especially music without words.

As a young child, the sound of a violin seemed so sad it made me cry. It hurt so much that I could barely listen to it. The sound of a group of violins was unbearable.

Yet, music with a deep pulse was comforting.

Trombones were somehow humorous; French horns the most beautiful mellow sound in the world; flutes were birds; and cello sounds comforting. And there was Tubby the tuba.

Politically Thinking, Eric L. Davis: Health insurance hikes are unsustainable

Posted on August 10, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

Later this month, the Green Mountain Care Board will announce its decision about Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont’s request to increase premiums by 12.6 percent for about 70,000 Vermonters enrolled in the insurer’s individual plans. The GMCB must balance BCBS’s need to maintain financial solvency with the crisis of affordability in the individual health insurance market in Vermont.

Letters to the Editor: Current health care proposals aren't the real answer

Posted on August 7, 2017 |
By Jason Kaye

In a recent guest editorial published in this paper, the co-authors — four top executives of medical centers and health insurance companies in Vermont — promoted the ideas of healthy lifestyles and individual responsibility as the primary strategy to end the health care crisis.

Letters to the Editor: Addison neighbors, responders made a difference

Posted on August 7, 2017 |
By Linda Taft

Editor’s note: The letter writer submitted this letter shortly after the May 18 microburst storm flattened her house in West Addison. We regret to say that we neglected to publish it at the time, but know that she still feels a great gratitude to the public servants and others who helped her out.

Dear Lifesavers, family and friends. “There but for the Grace of God go I.” As a true longstanding quote, this does not go quite far enough in my case.
