Posted on October 5, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

Public schools in Burlington were closed for four days last month because of a teachers’ strike. South Burlington teachers had announced plans to strike this week, but early Wednesday they were able to agree on a contract with the school board.

Letters to the Editor: Pedestrians urged to increase safety by facing traffic

Posted on October 5, 2017 |
By John Pratt

There is an ongoing problem both with the “townies” and especially the Middlebury College students. I often pass folks walking or running with their back to the traffic and some even are deaf because of headphones. Many of these walk/run people are on Weybrige Road, Horse Farm Road, Pearson Road or Routes 30 and 125.

In the late 90s I checked the Vermont stats and found that every pedestrian fatality, as of then, had been hit from behind. Even one in Rutland that was on the sidewalk (Bad luck there).

Letters to the Editor: Tread carefully with taxes, Middlebury

Posted on October 5, 2017 |
By Anders Holm

As Mr. Lynn recently stated in his editorial regarding school consolidation, many of us who own property are living by the same mantra of take a deep breath, exhale, and repeat when it comes to the looming town-wide property reassessment. Those of us who have lived in Vermont for decades know, regardless of market realities, property reassessment usually means an increase in assessed value and likely a hike in taxes.

Letters to the Editor: Too many issues for legalized pot

Posted on October 5, 2017 |
By Pambonnie Barrows

I support more study on legalizing marijuana in regards to public health.

How will the public be protected from exposure to second- and third-hand “smoke” from this? After all we are still battling to be protected from cigarette smoke. What of the effects on children and pets in households where people smoke the pot?

Victor Nuovo: The reasonableness of the Constitution

Posted on October 5, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the 27th of 28 essays by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought.

To characterize something as reasonable does not mean that it is delightful or pleasing. Eating ice cream or watching a movie may be delightful, but not necessarily reasonable. Having surgery is reasonable, when it is necessary to save your life; likewise, dieting, swallowing bitter medicine, exercising, and also morality and politics may be reasonable, though not necessarily pleasing.

Editorial: School district consolidation shocker — take a deep breath, exhale, repeat

Posted on October 2, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

School consolidation is going to take just a bit of getting used to.

Consider the headline on today’s front page, about Addison Central School District schools needing $31 million in facility improvements over the next five years. Know, too, that sum will be shared by all district residents — that is, each resident of Ripton and Weybridge will help pay for the renovations and upgrades at Bridport or Shoreham, and vice-versa; just like they have always done for MUMS and MUHS facilities.
