Guest Editorial: What did Adam Smith really say?

Posted on July 26, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

As the campaign season begins to hit high tide, one of the more common motifs from conservatives is the lament that government inhibits growth and prosperity and that a truly “free market” would unleash the powers of the marketplace — the result being a society bathed in opulence.

Guest Editorial: A long, hot summer - times two

Posted on July 26, 2012 |
By Bill McKibben

It’s turning into a hot climate summer in two ways, only one of which you can measure with a thermometer.

Amidst the deepening drought, the summer’s fourth heat wave, and the continued western fires, there’s something else breaking out: a siege of citizen uprisings at key points around the country all designed to keep coal in the hole, oil in the soil, gas... underground.

Clippings: Fly fishing solo on the fourth

Posted on July 26, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

On Independence Day I left behind the pomp and circumstance for a day of fly-fishing and solitude along mountain tributaries.

This was an uncanny decision for a “people person” like myself. On most holidays, and particularly the Fourth, you’ll usually find me mingling with a range of characters, tossing back beers and enjoying the festivities. But this year I needed some time to myself.

Around the Bend: Spoiling a teen with the basics

Posted on July 26, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

Our daughter is away this week, so we’re redoing her room as a late 13th birthday present. It’s no secret that we spoil her rotten, and this is just one more way to pamper her. When she gets home, her room will have two new luxuries: multiple electrical outlets  — grounded, no less — and heat.

She’s a princess, all right.

Editorial: Fixing the deficit in 5 minutes?

Posted on July 23, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Rumor has it financial wiz Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world, has a sure-fire solution to reign in the nation’s looming debt: “I could end the deficit in five minutes,” he allegedly tells a CNBC news reporter. “You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3 percent of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.”

The rumor is being spread via the Internet like wildfire and fueled by the millions of Americans upset with a dysfunctional Congress.

Editorial: A tale of two capitalists

Posted on July 19, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In a fascinating piece this Monday, New York Times columnist David Brooks portrays the presidential race as a battle of defining capitalism in the positive terms represented by Mitt Romney, or those terms cast in the negative by President Obama.

As with all columns that attempt to capture the complexities of a presidential race in a few hundred words, the argument is full of holes, but the premise has considerable merit and Brooks draws several thoughtful insights.

Clippings: Absence adds spark to local vistas

Posted on July 19, 2012 |
By Kaitlyn Kirkaldy

I recently realized that I don’t appreciate the smell of freshly spread manure enough.

I didn’t suddenly decide that I love the odor, but I have discovered the scent a reminder of home and of the beautiful landscape around me, a landscape that I have not appreciated fully until recently.

I attend college outside of Boston, which is a considerable change in scenery from what I see here in Addison County. Down there I don’t have the same views of rolling mountains and green pastures and the smell of manure is nowhere to be found.

Politically Thinking: Delegation mum on jet controversy

Posted on July 19, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

The Vermont Air National Guard facility at the Burlington International Airport is one of six locations being considered by Air Force officials in Washington as bases for the new F-35 fighter jet, which is planned to become operational in 2015. Burlington and Hill Air Force Base in Utah are the Pentagon’s two preferred locations for the F-35.

Around the bend: Who knew nothing could be fun?

Posted on July 12, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

We just returned from a week of camping in Salisbury. This year, for the first time, it actually resembled the sort of positive experience most people associate with vacations.

We don’t go away very often, what with my husband being self-employed and us having a large garden and various sorts of farm-type animals, most of whom have special issues (pet sitters generally aren’t willing to rub a goat’s temples to ease her migraines).

Guest Editorial: The coming wave

Posted on July 12, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

If you had two products of comparable quality and one cost $120,000 and the other $20,000, the choice between the two would be simple. If the $20,000 option were considerably better, then not only would the choice be easy, but the $120,000 option would cease to exist.

To a degree, that describes the horns of the dilemma to be encountered by higher education. No matter how they respond, the cost of a college education and the explosion in digital learning models will revamp the way the next generation approaches education.
