Editorial: The real gamble for Middlebury is not to try a business development director

Posted on March 14, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

At Middlebury’s Town Meeting, the one surprise came in the spur-of-the-moment discussion over the economic viability of the town’s newly hired business development director. In what started out as an introduction of the new director, Jamie Goucher, the conversation quickly turned to how the director’s performance would be measured and how committed the stakeholders were to funding the position over the first five years and thereafter. The concern was that taxpayers would be funding the position after the year 2017.

Ways of Seeing: A yogic look at your beverage choices

Posted on March 14, 2013 |
By Joanna Colwell

The stone hearth around our woodstove was built by a talented jack-of-all-trades named Gary Barnett. These days, the area immediately in front of the stove is covered with bits of orange rind. Whenever we eat an organic orange, I break the peel into small pieces, and place them on the hearth to dry. Why? Because they are a frequent ingredient in the herbal teas that we serve after class in the yoga studio. After the rind has dried I add it to the large jar; each time I open it an intoxicating citrusy fragrance is released.

Guest editorial: How the Legislature can restore balance to UVM board

Posted on March 11, 2013 |
By Emerson Lynn

Legislation has been proposed that forbids lawmakers from serving as trustees for the Vermont State Colleges, the University of Vermont and for the Vermont Student Assistance Corp. The bill’s purpose is to prevent the conflict of interest that arises when legislators serving as trustees have the responsibility of representing both the taxpayers and the schools. The belief is that the legislators should not be put in the position of serving two masters.

Guest editorial: Wind power bill defies strong public support

Posted on March 7, 2013 |
By Emerson Lynn

When two out of every three Vermonters express support for something, that’s considered overwhelming support. Politically, it’s bulletproof.

That was the message delivered by a Castleton State College poll in which 66 percent of Vermonters expressed support for wind power.

Eric Davis: In Vermont, only the wealthy are seeing incomes grow

Posted on March 7, 2013 |
By Eric Davis

One of Gov. Shumlin’s talking points in his speeches around the state is that “Vermont’s economy is on the mend.” The governor claims that Vermont has been doing better than most states in recovering from the recession, and that Vermont was the only state in the nation to see actual growth in personal income from 2010 to 2011. While this claim is borne out by the economic data, what the governor does not say is that the income growth in 2011 was concentrated in a small proportion of Vermont households.

Greg Dennis: Of pipelines and pie at town meeting

Posted on March 7, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Winston Churchill said of democracy that it is “the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” That may also be a good description of Vermont town meeting.

Voters at town meeting are asked to make decisions through a process that can be imprecise, contentious, confusing and ill informed.

Ways of Seeing: Gray days are a good time for making plans

Posted on March 7, 2013 |
By Abi Sessions

It’s early March, when the gray skies and “mixed precipitation” always put me into a restless and dreary state of mind. Seems like a good time to augment the mood by writing about death.

Until now, I have succumbed to the cultural taboo against talking about death or preparing for death. It’s morbid. It’s sad. Nobody wants to hear it. If you talk about dying, it might happen! I don’t want to think about it. So I haven’t.

Guest editorial: Vermonters need to control school spending

Posted on March 4, 2013 |
By Emerson Lynn

There should be a warning sign attached to this year’s vote on the state’s schools’ budgets. It should read: “Costs are higher than expected, and will go higher still, despite the fact that we are educating fewer students. No end in sight.”
