Clippings by John McCright: GPS will help us find a better way

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By John S. McCright

Last year Addison Independent columnist Eric Davis mentioned in a piece that one way the state could raise money to fund badly needed road and bridge repairs would be to put a GPS device in every car in Vermont and then charge a tax based on the actual number of miles driven each year. It is such an elegant and fair solution — the people who wear out the roads pay to replace them. What could be more fair?

Eric Davis: Unemployment stats misleading

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Eric Davis

In last week’s State of the Union speech, President Obama took credit for “the lowest unemployment rate in over five years.” On the surface this claim is correct. By the Labor Department’s commonly used measure, 6.7 percent of Americans were unemployed in December 2013, the lowest since October 2008.

Many economists have analyzed data on employment and unemployment over time. This work shows that, for many Americans, the job market is still far from full recovery mode.

Opinion: Town office is 'a great idea'

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Jim Larrabee

I can’t remain silent any longer. The selectboard’s proposed municipal building project in partnership with Middlebury College is a great deal, and I plan to support it with my vote. Is the proposed project perfect? No. However if we wait for perfection, I fear we will wait forever.

I would also like to publicly thank Victor Nuovo for all his years of service to the town of Middlebury. We all benefited from his wisdom and leadership.

Jim Larrabee, Middlebury

Guest editorial: Vermont is a greenhouse for entrepreneurial businesses

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Lisa Gosselin

“I’d love to move to Vermont and start a company here,” the snowboarder said with a sigh as we shared a chairlift at Stowe. I sighed too: If I had a dollar for every time I heard that, my mortgage would be paid.

That was nine years ago. Chris Kaiser, the snowboarder, went on to found Vermont Peanut Butter and this Feb. 6, he will join a panel discussion at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier to celebrate Vermont Entrepreneurship Week.

Opinion: Proposed gas pipeline runs counter to regional plan

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Cornwall selectboard

Editor’s note: The Cornwall selectboard on Jan. 30 sent this letter to all Addison County Regional Planning Commission members.

Your commission has been asked to approve Vermont Gas’ proposed “Phase 2” natural gas transmission pipeline through our community. We expect you are familiar with the details of that proposal and the arguments made by proponents. The Cornwall selectboard respectfully requests that you comply with the ACRPC Regional Plan and disapprove the request.

Opinion: Seeger's music, environmentalism, spirit still inspire

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

I want to honor Pete Seeger who died at the age of 94 on Jan. 27, 2014.

I thank Pete for inviting us to sing along. Years ago, in Burlington, I had the chance to be in his physical presence at a Memorial Auditorium concert. Pete’s spirit lives forever, since we have the ability to reflect it, singing his songs and keeping our hearts open.

I thank Pete for having been a steady force behind the cleanup of the Hudson River.

Guest editorial: Legislators should consider options on day care bill

Posted on February 3, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

As Vermont has witnessed with campaign finance reform and Entergy, it’s costly to pursue things legislatively that might not meet judicial muster. The Legislature may be on that same questionable path once again with the proposal to unionize the state’s childcare providers.

Opinion: College, town selectmen have been unfairly vilified

Posted on February 3, 2014 |
By Frank Punderson

The town and gown relationship that exists between Middlebury College and the village of Middlebury is the envy of many New England schools. Naysayers to the college’s offer have their right to object, but to cast the college as devious, pursuing only its self-interest; as being involved in a “land grab”; to talk of conspiracy; to vilify a respected citizen and selectman, Victor Nuovo — is as sad as it is ludicrous.

Passing of Pete Seeger inspires poetic tribute

Posted on February 3, 2014 |
By Roy Vestrich

Roy Vestrich writes, “This piece is a tribute and remembrance for Pete Seeger, and I know from conversations overheard at the local bagel shop, that he is in many of our thoughts.”

The Unbroken Petals

for Pete Seeger

At a table near mine

in a local café

two older men are sipping coffee

and talking about you,

about the specifics of your voice

thinning into time

and the worn banjo strapped
