Politically Thinking: Unification not high on Shumlin list

Posted on May 26, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

On Town Meeting Day, the voters of the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union approved the creation of a unified union district. Last week, the unified union was overturned on a reconsideration vote in Vergennes. After Vergennes voters rejected the proposal, ANwSU Superintendent Tom O’Brien said that school consolidation would “be put to rest for a period of time in our district … it will hibernate for a while, if you will.”

Between the Lines: Memorial Day triggers mixed feelings

Posted on May 26, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

My friend John once told the story of the worst thing that ever happened to him.

It was in World War II. He and 30 other young guys were in a boat off the coast of Norway, part of the Allies’ effort to retake the country from the Germans. Norway was bitterly contested territory, a tough place to be.

John’s boat landed in a cove. He and two of his buddies were ordered to go inland and reconnoiter the countryside. They armed themselves as heavily as they could and set off on foot to see what they could find.

Guest Editorial: Smart meters are first step in bigger process

Posted on May 23, 2011 |
By Emerson K. Lynn

Change comes easiest when people understand how they benefit. Motivation is almost in direct proportion to how much they save, or profit, or are made to feel better. Central to all this is the ability to communicate effectively.

That ability, or willingness, will dictate the degree of success Vermont will have with the “smart grid” technology that is about to become part of our lives. We can do the minimum, and accomplish little, or we can use the technology as the necessary catalyst to prompt the sorts of changes that truly make a difference.

Lessons from Trump's Saga

Posted on May 19, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Now that Donald Trump has pulled out of the race for president under the GOP mantle, what can be learned from his bizarre mini-candidacy? Chris Cillizza, who writes a column called The Fix in the Washington Post suggests that the take-away lesson for other Republican presidential candidates in 2012 is that confrontation works… any confrontation.

Clippings: Family in no hurry to empty the nest

Posted on May 19, 2011 |
By John Flowers

It seems like eons ago, but I can remember my parents talking about the prospect of being empty nesters with a sense of wonderment and (gasp) anticipation. My dad spoke of converting my room into storage for his gargantuan stamp collection, while mom talked about being able to travel with less baggage (could she really have been talking about me?).

All of a sudden, the clock struck “18” and I was no longer flinging open the door, waltzing to my room and shouting “What’s for dinner?” on the way up the stairs.

Around the bend: Prime ingredient to guilty pleasure

When it comes to this column, there are a few subjects I just won’t touch. Politics and religion, for instance, are off the table. But now, after years of secrecy, and at the risk of horrifying the citizens of Addison County, I feel compelled to write frankly about a taboo topic.

Editorial: Welfare for oil billionaires?

Posted on May 16, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The big five oil companies in the United States — Chevron, Shell Oil, BP America, ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil — made $35 billion in profit in the first three months of 2011. In his public radio address last week, President Barack Obama called for eliminating tax breaks for all oil and gas companies — a move that would eliminate about $2 billion annually in tax breaks for these five oil giants and raise $44 billion over the next decade. At $140 billion in profit per year for the big five, that’s less than 1.5 percent of their profit.

Health care fears overblown

Posted on May 12, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

What seems to irk opponents the most about H.202, the much ballyhooed health-care reform bill passed by the Vermont legislature last week, is that Gov. Peter Shumlin and the Democratic-controlled Legislature are getting a lot of credit for establishing a process to move toward a new health care system without first figuring out the details. As one conservative curmudgeon noted in an attempt to dismiss the importance of the bill, who wouldn’t be for creating an improved health care system that covers all Vermonters for less money?

Clippings: The Story behind 'vehiculess' man

Posted on May 12, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

After living in China without a personal car for almost two years, I decided to give what I call the “vehiculess” life in Vermont a whirl. So far, it’s gone really well.

The biggest surprise to me has been the shock of friends and colleagues who can’t believe that it’s possible to live in rural Vermont without a car. But due to the central location of my Middlebury apartment, the rapidly expanding and improving Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) bus lines, and my love for biking, I haven’t needed a car outside of work.
