Opinion: State showing wrong priorities

It seems devastatingly sad that Vermont is planning to spend $8 million defending the right to require labels of foods containing GMOs — that is, genetically modified organisms — that have caused no health problems and certainly no deaths, while the Vermont Department for Children and Families needs serious reorganization and rehabilitation so as to prevent abuse and deaths of innocent children under its supervision.

Community Forum: Legislature ignored key issues this session

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Heidi Scheurmann

This week’s writer is Rep. Heidi E. Scheuermann, who is in her fourth term in the Vermont House.

There have been many opinions about how successful the 2013-2014 legislative session was.

Just prior to adjournment, Gov. Peter Shumlin told the House of Representatives “we have made this biennium one of the most productive in recent memory.” In other press reports, House Speaker Shap Smith called the last session “incredibly productive.”

Opinion: Politician claims unfair criticism

Editor’s note: The writer submitted this letter at the beginning of the month but due to an error at the paper publication was delayed until now.

I was surprised at the vitriolic attack on me in the May 26 edition of your newspaper.

Opinion: Let's use our common sense and oppose the pipeline

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By John Madden

Concerning the Canadian Gaz Métro (VGS) proposed 12-inch, high-pressure (600 psi) gas transmission pipeline through Addison County:

Vermont law (30 V.S.A., Section 248(b)(5)) and common sense say that proposals that would be a threat to public health and safety are not in the public good.

Google “explosions of natural gas transmission pipelines” for pictures and record of that potential harm to Vermont and Vermonters.

Editorial: Two differing views on U.S. military involvement in Iraq

By Angelo S. Lynn

When former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered a speech at Norwich last Thursday, she stayed true to the tune played during President George W. Bush’s eight years in office from 2000 to 2008 — that U.S. intervention in international affairs is the purview of the United States and our duty to make the world a safer place.

About the Vermont Gas pipeline and the dreaded “F” word — fracking:

1.      Fracking

Widely criticized “fracking” to increase oil and gas production is used worldwide. Its use in the U.S. has allowed our domestic production of oil to increase to where it accounts for about 50 percent of our needs.

Opinion: Alienation can lead to suffering and great tragedy

By Roger Marum

Are we listening well enough?

Elliot Rodger was involved in therapy relationships (not necessarily therapeutic) for 14 of his 22 years, and though practitioners of this gentle art of psychotherapy are varied in the traits and talents they possess, he seems to have been lost to those with whom he worked, and however devastating this is to his parents, at some level of intimacy they too may have been lost to him.

Opinion: A haiku for the Public Service Board

PSB Poem

Governors come and onto “DC” they may go

Influenced by money from those who help them “grow.”

But like invasive species, the seeds they can sow —

May alter landscapes in ways we don’t want to know!

Contamination of water, land, communities,

are often part and parcel when power is seized.

Editorial: Canada OKs oil pipeline to British Columbia coast as U.S. Senate committee OKs Keystone

By Angelo S. Lynn

As the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted 12-10 this week in support of the Canadian-based Keystone XL Pipeline that would cut through the country on its way to the Gulf of Mexico, groups in the western province of British Columbia are preparing to fight another pipeline, called the Northern Gateway, from the same tar sands region of Alberta to the BC Pacific coast.

Clippings: Pizza cravings strike close to home

Posted on June 18, 2014 |
By Trent Campbell

Back in the early 1950s my dad was the team manager for the Carleton College men’s basketball team. Once after an away game in Iowa two Carleton players from Chicago suggested the team go out for pizza at a pizzeria they knew of. My dad’s response was, “What’s pizza?” I don’t know what is worse, being 19 and never having eaten pizza, or being 19 and having your first pizza experience be in Iowa?
