Opinion: Juxtaposition of photo, addiction story was striking

Posted on August 13, 2015 |
By Sylvia Coffin

I was drawn to Trent Campbell’s stunning composition on the front page of the Aug. 3 edition of the Addison Independent.

The copper container for the distillery is certainly a handsome piece of work. I was also drawn to the article right next to the photo. About a website to help fight drug addiction. Could that also maybe include a drinking addiction also? Interesting pair-up on the front page.

Guest editorial: A ‘rightful place’ for Iran; a way to avoid war for the U.S.

Posted on August 13, 2015 |
By Haviland Smith

Iran and the P5+1 (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States — plus Germany) have now agreed on a document that severely limits Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon. In return for that limitation and the ability of the Western signatories to inspect existing Iranian nuclear facilities as well as suspected military/nuclear facilities, the Iranians will see the end of most of the sanctions that have plagued them since 1979.

Editorial: Project requires high standards

As Middlebury residents, businesses and town officials jump into the fray that has rather suddenly surrounded the proposed railway improvements through Middlebury’s downtown — replacing the underpasses on Main Street and Merchants Row — let’s be sure the message we’re sending does not smack of a community opposed to development and resistant to change.

Opinion: Sentence begs question of the value of human life

Posted on August 10, 2015 |
By Sally Borden

Please turn to the person next to you and ask if they find the following scenario shocking. A woman is driving under the influence of alcohol after a long day of work. She is also under the influence of three prescription drugs, all designed to combat anxiety and depression. The pills come with the caution that they should not be taken while consuming alcohol. The pills heighten the effects of alcohol.

The woman kills a man on a bicycle.

Opinion: Banners provide message of peace

Posted on August 10, 2015 |
By Patty Heather-Lea

Seventy years ago, Aug. 6, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. On Aug. 9, 1945, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.

Thirty years ago, Aug. 4, 1985, the Pentagon was encircled by peace banners.

Justine Merritt, a grandmother from Denver, was moved during her daily prayers: She wanted to encircle the Pentagon in a ribbon of peace. That year was 1982.

Opinion: Confederate flag offensive

Posted on August 10, 2015 |
By Addison Indedendent

On Route 7, right as you enter Middlebury, there is a Confederate flag hanging on a house. I feel that the flag is now a symbol of evil and sends the wrong message.

As we are one of the most welcoming states in the nation, I feel that it is giving visitors the wrong idea of our town. I think this will tell the visitors that we might be a racist town or a town that is not welcoming to people of different origins or skin colors.

Eric Davis: Vermont economy is 'mixed at best'

Posted on August 5, 2015 |
By Eric Davis

Tom Kavet, the economist who forecasts state tax revenues for the Legislature, presented his semi-annual report on the Vermont economy last week.

Kavet noted that the unemployment rate in Vermont — 3.6 percent in June — continues to be one of the lowest in the country. Job growth in the state has picked up a bit: 1.7 percent over the past 12 months compared with 0.7 percent the previous year.

Greg Dennis: Hashtag is not a breakfast dish

Posted on August 5, 2015 |
By Greg Dennis

So is social media making us all one big happy human family? Are we all friends now that we’re on Facebook — or are we fake friends who’ve been fooled into exposing our personal interests so companies can market to us?

Most of us — a billion-plus — have made our peace with Facebook. It’s not just a way to find long-lost friends. It’s an easy way to keep in touch with people we don’t see every day.
