Natural gas pipeline would strengthen area's economy

Posted on March 31, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

A utility’s proposal to explore the possibility of extending a natural gas pipeline from Burlington to Vergennes and into Middlebury should be greeted with enthusiasm by residents, businesses and all who want to see greenhouse gases diminished. That’s because natural gas is less expensive than other fuel options, pollutes less, and reduces Vermonters reliance on foreign oil.

Editorial: Cutting through the partisan lies

Posted on March 28, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Try to explain why this statement is false: “Cutting the federal deficit will create jobs.”

The simple answer is because government spending creates jobs by putting money in the hands of those who will spend it, thus priming the economy.

Cutting government spending, as Republicans in Congress want to do, will create the opposite effect of what they are saying will happen — an important point for America taxpayers and voters to understand.

Clippings: Should U.S. education follow China?

Posted on March 24, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

Americans are up in arms because while Shanghai, China, achieved first place across the board on the 2010 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), U.S. high school students tested 31st out of 65 economic regions in mathematics, 23rd in science, and 17th in reading. President Obama referred to the issue as “our generation’s Sputnik moment” and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan labeled it “an absolute wake up call for America.”

Around the bend: Home brewing leads to 'ale-itism'

Posted on March 24, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

This winter, I made my first batch of home-brewed beer. I only wish I had done it sooner.

Until a few months ago, I never thought of beer as something you could make yourself. Then I heard a radio show about home brewing and learned that (a) beer does not, as I had always vaguely assumed, come directly from some stream in Latrobe, Pa., and (b) making your own beer is a relatively simple process, requiring little equipment and only a few ingredients.

Renewed look at building new town office in Midd prompts review of priorities

Posted on March 24, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The revived effort to conceptualize a new town office building for Middlebury has two apparent goals: to tear down much of the existing building and replace it with a smaller, more modern and efficient office space, and — by doing so — save on fuel costs.

Middlebury residents rejected a proposal in 2002 for a $6 million proposal that called for a 13,982-square-foot, two-story structure on the same site. That proposal would have incorporated the town police headquarters and kept the existing municipal gymnasium.

Editorial: Renewed scrutiny needed for VY

Posted on March 21, 2011 |

The growing crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan highlights several important considerations Vermonters must ponder concerning the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in southern Vermont.

First, we must determine whether the plant’s age warrants extension of its license due to expire in 2012.

Clippings: Daylight Saving Time has expired

Posted on March 17, 2011 |
By John Flowers

Founding father Benjamin Franklin — what a guy. He came up with a lot of neat ideas, including bifocals, the lightning rod and the stove that bears his name. In his spare time, he was an author, printer, politician, postmaster and scientist.

But every March, I wish ol’ Ben had been flying his kite instead of brainstorming what I believe to be his most dubious contribution to society: Daylight Saving Time (DST) — setting the clock back one hour in the fall and forward one hour in the spring to maximize the availability of daylight.

By Angelo S. Lynn

Saturday’s Chili Festival in Middlebury drew a throng of about 3,500 people who enjoyed socializing on a closed Main Street while tasting more than 80 varieties of chili on a semi-raw, March day. It was, as coordinators of the event said, “an overwhelming success.”

Politically Thinking: GOP court likely to favor big spenders

Posted on March 17, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

In two weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral argument in a case raising important First Amendment issues about public financing of political campaigns.

The case comes from Arizona. In the 1990s, many Arizona legislators faced civil and criminal charges involving campaign contributions from the gambling industry. In 1998, Arizona’s voters passed a referendum establishing a “Clean Elections” program that provides public funding to candidates for state offices who voluntarily limit the amount of money they raise in private donations.
