Middlebury's former town office demolition nears

MIDDLEBURY — Plans for demolition of the old municipal building in Middlebury are moving ahead.

Members of the Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday unanimously accepted bids from contractors to perform asbestos abatement in the building and gymnasium at 94 Main St., which served as town offices for five decades until last month.

Based on the recommendation of the environmental consulting firm Clay Point Associates Inc. of Williston, the selectboard picked bidders Catamount Environmental Inc. to do asbestos abatement in the gym, and Environmental Hazards Management Inc. to perform that task in the municipal building. Clay Point suggested splitting the work between two firms due to a tight construction schedule and the size and scope of the project.

Middlebury Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay said Middlebury College — which has agreed to finance asbestos abatement and demolition of the two buildings — is comfortable with the costs submitted by the two companies.

She added the two buildings are likely to come down in late June.
