Rowers stroke in Boston, Lake Champlain

FERRISBURGH — On the third weekend of July, members of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Rowing for Racing group of Community Rowers traveled to Boston for two days of whaleboat races in celebration of the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world.

New shop sells lingerie for all women, all sizes

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury is home to the new Curve Appeal lingerie shop, offering lingerie in sizes for every body type, plus nontoxic, organic sensual products like massage oils.

Curve Appeal owner Kristin Lawson, a mother of three, has been doing house parties for women all over Vermont for nearly 10 years, and said her party customers expressed dissatisfaction with the lingerie options available to them in the area.

Successful leader retiring from affordable housing agency

MIDDLEBURY — After working more than a quarter-century as an attorney in such urban centers as Los Angeles and Boston, Terry McKnight decided in 2002 that he was ready for a new career with a different focus. So he applied to become executive director of the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT), the area’s largest creator and manager of affordable housing.

McKnight got the job, and has never regretted it.

Brenda Haynes Schill named new executive director at Eastview

Monkton Central taps Knox as new principal

Betsy Knox, a longtime educator who lives in Hinesburg, has taken the helm as the interim principal of the school — and she says she couldn’t be happier to be there.

Groups help trout in Otter Creek

Bristol Police arrest man who escaped correctional facility

BRISTOL — Bristol police on July 17 arrested a town man on a warrant from the Vermont Department of Corrections. Police arrested Jonah S. Kleinfeldt, 39, for escape.

Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said his force took Kleinfeldt to the Chittenden County Correctional Center in South Burlington.

In other department news, a man Bristol police arrested last month was acquitted of selling marijuana by a jury in Addison County Superior Court, but was convicted of lesser charges.

Due to the storm last night the main phone number at the Addison Independent office in Middlebury stopped working. If you call 802-388-4944 the phone will ring, but when the folks in the office pick up the line the call is immediately disconnected.

We have alerted FairPoint Communications, who said they would fix the line today.

New VSAC report documents state higher education trends

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont high school seniors with at least one college-educated parent are more likely to attend college than classmates who would be first-generation college students, a new report by the Vermont Student Assistant Corp. found.

A biannual survey by VSAC of a majority of the state’s high school seniors — including those in Addison County — revealed an “aspiration gap” between those who would be first- and second-generation college students.

Pipeline opponents ask Public Service Board to reopen proceedings

ADDISON COUNTY — Opponents of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project have asked the Vermont Public Service Board to reexamine its approval of Phase I of the pipeline, while the Department of Public Service asked the Board not to delay construction of the project.

Three residents who live in towns affected by the pipeline, which would run from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes, on July 21 petitioned the Board to investigate the reasons behind a 40 percent project cost increase announced by Vermont Gas Systems earlier this month, and take appropriate action.
