Top stories of 2014: #8 — School budgets go down as call for tax reform grows

As in many past years, 2014 saw many Vermonters complain about their property taxes, and that portion of the tax that pays for education in particular. But as in most years, proposals for reform of school funding were put forward but not acted upon.

Still, residents in seven local towns indicated that they had had enough, and they rejected some proposed school spending plans on Town Meeting Day.

Top 10 stories of 2014: #9 — Middlebury College chooses Duke dean as next president

Middlebury College has been called “the town’s college,” and many things the college did in 2014 did indeed effect the town and surrounding communities. And some of the things that happened up on the hill were simply important in and of themselves.

The most momentous occurrence this year, of course, was the selection in November of Laurie L. Patton, a dean at Duke University, to succeed current President Ron Liebowitz when he steps down next summer.

Teams or individual athletes from each of the four local high schools — Middlebury, Mount Abraham, Otter Valley and Vergennes — earned banners.

Mt. Abraham alum lands on Jeopardy!

BRISTOL — If the clue was “The Mount Abraham Union High School graduate who appeared on Jeopardy! last week,” the answer would be “Who is Daniel Eling?”

Eling, 36, earned a spot on the popular quiz show after three years of trying. He said it was a lifelong dream of his.

“I wanted to be on the show for a long time, for 25 years,” he said.

Trio taps senses with a new type of therapy

MIDDLEBURY — Spas are one barometer of a community’s mental and physical health, and last winter the staff at Waterfalls Day Spa, on the lower level of the Middlebury Inn, saw that their clients were suffering.

“Last winter was brutal,” says Sara Daly, one of the spa owners. “It was so icy; we noticed an increase in fractures. People didn’t want to be in Vermont.”

So Daly, along with Waterfalls aesthetician and co-owner Laurie Webb, and massage therapist Sarah Kuhl, got to work.

SunCommon withdraws Route 7 solar proposal in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — The application for what has become a controversial 150-kilowatt community solar array in New Haven was withdrawn on Dec. 19. Waterbury solar firm SunCommon withdrew the application with the Public Service Board citing community concerns.

The proposal would have occupied about one acre on the west side of Route 7 near the Waltham town line. The company noted opposition to the project in its decision to end its bid, and issued the following statement:

Porter nurses ratify first-ever union contract

ACSU in mourning after student takes his own life

SALISBURY — The Middlebury Union High School community is mourning the death of 9th-grader Walter “TJ” Duncanson IV, who took his own life on Dec. 26. He was 14.

Ripton man charged with robbing RiteAid pharmacy

MIDDLEBURY — A Ripton man on Tuesday told a court that he did not steal prescription drugs from the Rite Aid Pharmacy in a Sunday evening robbery of the Middlebury store.

Michael Maheu, 40, pleaded innocent in Rutland Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony count of larceny from a person, in connection with the Dec. 28 robbery. He faces up to 10 years in jail and/or a fine of up to $500 if convicted.
