HOPE readies holiday food, gifts

MIDDLEBURY — While the outdoor temperatures until recently have screamed “spring,” the calendar reads November — a time of year when officials and volunteers at the organization Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) become members of Santa’s honorary elves association to make sure the county’s low-income residents will have a nice meal and presents for their children as the holiday season takes hold.

Howard University Gospel Choir to perform In Middlebury

Town Hall Theater is bringing something extraordinary to Middlebury on Sunday:  the first-ever Vermont performance by the Howard University Gospel Choir.

Formed on the campus of historically black Howard University, Washington, D.C., in 1968, the Howard Gospel Choir has performed throughout the world.  As the first college choir of its kind, HGC is a trailblazer for all gospel music ministries on collegiate campuses.

Arnold Bay tree-cutting deal to be discussed

FERRISBURGH — Members of the Ferrisburgh selectboard are due to meet with town attorney Jim Carroll to discuss a resolution of the town’s dispute with the Vorsteveld Farm over its extensive tree-cutting in the town right of way along Arnold Bay Road.

On Tuesday the board set the meeting with Carroll for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, and it probably will take place behind closed doors. According to Ferrisburgh Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence, Carroll has prepared a proposal for the town to present to the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm.

Ferrisburgh extends land sale deal

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday agreed to give the contracted buyer of the town-owned 34.91-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A another month to arrange financing to complete the purchase.

Andrew Peterson, owner of the four-year-old business Peterson Quality Malt in Monkton, has a $337,500 deal to buy the property.

Bristol fire crew stops power line fire

BRISTOL — A Bristol family is grateful to the swift action of the Bristol Fire Department in its response to a blaze that started as a result of the Oct. 30 windstorm.

David A. Livingston said that the gales that reached 80 mph in many place in Vermont early last Monday pulled an electric cable from a barn at the home of his father, David, and his wife, Wendy, off Hardscrabble Road.

“At 2:30 a.m. a power line got ripped off the barn,” the younger Livingston said.

South Dakota resident wins Morgan horse raffle

MIDDLEBURY — Thomas Mikrut of Prairie Winds Morgans in South Dakota was the big winner of the 2017 University of Vermont Morgan Foal Raffle. Mikrut becomes the proud owner of UVM Zephyr, a beautiful young Morgan whose value had been estimated at $3,000 (for tax purposes).

Prairie Winds plans to add UVM Zephyr to its breeding program, according to UVM Morgan Horse Farm Operations Coordinator Margot Smithson. Prairie Winds currently has 26 Morgans.

Hip-hop artists bring Food for Thought fundraising tour to Middlebury

Two of Vermont’s prominent Hip Hop artists are embarking on a month long tour around New England to raise money for local food shelves. Jarv (from Windsor) and Mister Burns (from Burlington) will be coming to Two Brothers Tavern in Middlebury on Friday, Nov. 10. The show starts at 10 p.m.
