How does a recount work? Ballot by ballot, Vergennes reassesses election

VERGENNES — A meticulous Monday afternoon recount at Vergennes City Hall confirmed the March 7 results of the race for city mayor: Former three-term Mayor Mike Daniels edged two-term incumbent Bill Benton, 270-265.

That margin, one that is less than 1 percent of the votes cast on Town Meeting Day, remained unchanged after two hours of painstaking counting by five members of the Vergennes Board of Civil Authority: Justices of the Peace Barry Aldinger, Lynn Pope and Rena Trepanier, and Aldermen Lowell Bertrand and Mark Koenig.

Hot chili warms up a cold day

Lawmakers lobby Fish & Wildlife on coyote hunting question

VERMONT — Motivated by constituent outrage over unregulated coyote hunting, some legislators are asking state wildlife officials to rethink Vermont’s open season on the canine predator.

“Coyotes are important animals not vermin to be attacked,” said Rep. Jim McCullough, D-Williston. “They’re important ‘people’ that need, if you will, the honor of having controls on their hunting or their ‘taking.’ And right now they don’t have that honor.”

Unusual avian visitor lures birders to Brandon

BRANDON — Brandon is home to a lot of unique individuals, but a truly rare bird paid a visit last week.

A beautiful white trumpeter swan attracted the interest and excitement of the birding community when a fine specimen was seen off Route 73 in the Otter Creek floodwaters hanging out with a flock of Canada geese.

Carl Phelps owner of Miller Hill Farm, Nursery and Gardens in Sudbury spotted the swan on Wednesday, March 8, south of the railroad overpass.

Forum on anti-Semitism to be held this Sunday

Local 4-H'ers do well at poultry skill-a-thon

JOHNSON — Vermont 4-H’ers participating in this year’s Poultry Activity Day proved that they know their chickens and eggs.

University of Vermont Extension 4-H organized the event, which took place March 4 at Johnson State College. It included a poultry skill-a-thon, Jeopardy, presentations by 4-H’ers and a Crafty Chicken Show.

Vergennes man pleads innocent to felony burglary, grand larceny and selling stolen property charges

RUTLAND — Jake Desjadon, 30, of Vergennes on March 10 pleaded innocent in state criminal court in Rutland to three felonies and two misdemeanor charges stemming from what Vermont State Police allege are multiple burglaries and from the circumstances of his March 9 arrest by VSP and Vergennes police.

Desjadon was ordered held in the Marble Valley Correctional Center for lack of $75,000 bail.

Brandon man accused of hitting child, faces felony charges

BRANDON — A Brandon man identified as a habitual offender with three previous felonies has been charged with three counts of felony aggravated domestic assault.

Brandon police responded to a report of a family fight in Bridge Park on Friday, March 10, and arrested Jeremy J. Young, 42.

The victim told police that Young pushed her down while she was holding their child, choked her, pulled a clump of her hair out, and pulled out one of her teeth with his bare hands.

The victim also claimed that Young threw a punch at her, missed, and hit the child.

Man gets busted for DUI twice in one day in Bristol

BRISTOL — Local police worked with Vermont State Police to arrest a man in Bristol on March 10 — twice in one day.

On Friday, March 10, at around 1:31 a.m. police were called to Main Street on a report that Joshua Bley, 36, had approached a woman on the sidewalk and shouted at her from his vehicle. Bley, who was described by Bristol police as an Oregon resident and by state police as a Lincoln resident, allegedly yelled out to the female, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid,” and attempted to engage her in conversation.

Two Brothers gets a facelift

MIDDLEBURY — One afternoon last week, in the newly renovated kitchen of Two Brothers Tavern’s underground Lounge, executive chef Matt Corrente prepped one Neapolitan pizza after another to the cranked-up backdrop of Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” Surrounded by boxes and soon-to-be installed equipment, Corrente moved about the new kitchen space, whose chic black walls create an open facade that protrudes out of the corner next to the bar.
