Local runners dodge tragedy at Boston Marathon

BOSTON — Ben Bruno of Middlebury was at the family meeting area about two blocks from the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday when two bombs exploded. The 28-year-old — who had finished the race in 3:03.52, about an hour before the first blast— and his companions were confused when they heard the explosions.

“I didn’t want to assume the worst,” he said. “I hoped for the best — maybe it was a transformer blowing or a car backfiring.

College hosts forum for ‘fair trade recycling,’ experts seek safer handling of material

Bristol runner moved by bombing tragedy

BOSTON — Monday should have been one of the best days in Meghan Lout’s life.

The accomplished Bristol runner was enjoying her third Boston Marathon under ideal running conditions with her mom, boyfriend and pals cheering her on.

“The race was fantastic and it was a beautiful day,” Lout, 34, recalled on Wednesday. “It was a wonderful atmosphere.”

That atmosphere was shattered in the blink of an eye.

Heroin, guns, money found in Saturday raid in Starksboro

STARKSBORO — Authorities found guns, cash and heroin in a raid on an apartment at 132 Big Hollow Road in Starksboro conducted Saturday morning by Vergennes police with the aid of Vermont State Police from the New Haven barracks.

All four people arrested in the raid on drug charges pled innocent on Monday in Addison Superior Court’s Criminal Division to all counts and were released on bail that ranged from $5,000 to $50,000.

Bourne to bid farewell to Mary Hogan School after 26 years as leader

MIDDLEBURY — For 26 years, Bonnie Bourne has woken up each weekday morning energized by her sincere belief that she has the best job in the world: principal at Middlebury’s Mary Hogan Elementary School.

Bourne last week announced she will retire from the best job in the world at the end of this school year, citing three primary reasons — her three granddaughters.

“The time has arrived,” Bourne, 64, said. “There’s a tug between full-time administrative work and three granddaughters, and the granddaughters won.”

Man sentenced in nursing home robbery

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Criminal Court Judge Helen Toor on Monday handed out a four-to-10-year prison sentence to one of the two men involved in a July 4, 2012, armed robbery at a Bristol nursing home.

As part of a plea deal first agreed upon in February, Timothy Boardman, 42, of Monkton will get credit for time already served. Boardman must also pay $141 of court costs.

South Street work tops short list of Middlebury public works projects

MIDDLEBURY — A substantial overhaul of water and sewer infrastructure under South Street will dominate a relatively short list of Middlebury public works projects this spring and summer.

The list, discussed on Thursday by Middlebury Director of Operations Dan Werner, also includes water and sewer upgrades on Charles Avenue and Water Street, along with paving projects for portions of Foote Street, Lower Foote Street and the Painter Hills subdivision.

Middlebury's Mark Perrin appointed to State Board of Education

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin appointed Mark Perrin, a resident of Middlebury, to the State Board of Education on April 12 to serve a six-year term (2013-2019).

Perrin owns and operates Green Peppers Restaurant and Creek Road Farm with his wife, Donna. He has served on local school boards since the mid-1990s, and is a strong believer in life-long learning. Perrin has been actively involved in the community by serving on the Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Investment, and Middlebury Business Association boards.
