USDA offers funding for apple losses in May frost

ADDISON COUNTY — A freeze that descended over the region for four nights in early May destroyed a substantial amount of the early apple crop at Happy Valley Orchards in Middlebury, as well as a large number of apples at other orchards in the county.

Smith tries to reclaim Addison-5 House seat

NEW HAVEN — New Haven Republican Harvey Smith is seeking to reclaim the Addison-5 House seat he held for eight years prior to being unseated in 2006.

Smith, 65, was first elected to the House in November of 1998 and served through 2006. He was defeated that year by Rep. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, who last month lost a close contest to Steve Howard of Rutland County in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

MIDDLEBURY — The nearly 40 people gathered in Middlebury last Wednesday for a forum on local dairy agreed on many lingering issues holding back the industry, but solutions proved to be harder to come by.

MacIntire honored posthumously

SHOREHAM —Wilson MacIntire is gone but far from forgotten in his hometown of Shoreham, a community that last week conferred two posthumous honors upon one of its foremost civic volunteers.

Town selectmen confirmed the two tennis courts located behind the local elementary school will henceforth bear MacIntire’s name. The board also named MacIntire — who died on March 14 — Shoreham’s “citizen of the year” in recognition of the many civic and philanthropic efforts he pursued on behalf of the town.

Brandon artist shows 'sunny' side in new work

BRANDON — “It’s like icing a cake,” said renowned artist and Brandon resident Warren Kimble of his process in creating his new work, unveiled for the first time at an opening reception on Sept. 5 at Brandon Music on Country Club Road. As fate would have it, Kimble revealed the work in Brandon Music Café, the same studio and gallery he worked in years ago.

Skatepark expands thanks to donations

BRISTOL - Over the past summer a crew at the Hub teen center in Bristol has been busy expanding the skatepark, which is used by skateboarders, inline skaters, and riders of scooters and BMX bikes from around the five-town region and beyond. Thanks to the donation of many ramps and features from the town of Hinesburg and the donation of time and services from many local businesses and organizations, the skatepark has doubled in size.

Eastview work to start after $1M in aid arrives

MIDDLEBURY — Developers of Eastview at Middlebury on Tuesday officially landed $1 million in federal aid that is expected to allow for an Oct. 1 groundbreaking on the planned 99-unit retirement community next to the Porter Medical Center campus off South Street.

Gov. James Douglas delivered the news in the form of a large, symbolic novelty check to Eastview principal Rob Alberts in a ceremony at the edge of the large, Middlebury College-owned field on which the project will be built.

MIDDLEBURY — Two weeks ago, most members of this year’s incoming class at the Gailer School were soaking up some rays at the beach, playing ball, catching a flick at the movie theater or just chilling out at home.

Meanwhile, two of the school’s newest enrollees were almost a half a world away, preparing for a hazardous, life-changing journey through a war-torn countryside to board a plane for the safer climes of Addison County, Vermont.

ANwSU, teachers on brink of deal

VERGENNES — After nearly nine months of negotiations, teachers and Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials have come to a tentative agreement on a new two-year contract.

Superintendent Tom O’Brien said that the contract, pending approval by the supervisory union board, will maintain the status quo on salary and benefit levels for teachers at the Vergennes-area schools, with the addition of the already budgeted salary increases.
