Group eyes more local foods in schools

MIDDLEBURY — Some 75 administrators, teachers, foodservice workers and students gathered at Middlebury Union High School on April 5 to discuss the burgeoning movement that is bringing local foods into schools across the county.

The second annual Stone Soup Summit, put on by the Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN), aimed to spread information, ideas and experiences on all angles of the farm-to-school effort — from composting to funding to incorporating local food education into the curriculum.

Legislature eyes change to raw milk law

School garden springs into the classroom

BRISTOL — Students at Mount Abraham Union High School rolled up their sleeves, picked up their hoes, and got their hands dirty in the school garden last week. Overseen by volunteer Walter O’Donoghue, who runs the Mount Abe garden, a team of ninth-graders on Thursday turned the soil in the beds and began seeding a wide range of crops from spring lettuce and radishes to summer tomatoes and peppers to leeks and winter squash.

Curtain comes down on After Dark Music Series

MIDDLEBURY — After 16 years of lighting up local stages, Middlebury’s After Dark Music series has itself gone dark.

Series founders and coordinators Harvey and Carol Green explained that while they have enjoyed bringing numerous high-caliber folk, blues, jazz and other acts to Addison County’s shire town over the years, they are ready to retire from the physical strain and financial challenge of organizing a half-dozen shows each year.

Midd OKs $5.9m spending plan

MIDDLEBURY — A smattering of Middlebury voters at an April 13 meeting approved a 2011-2012 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of almost $5.9 million.

The annual budget meeting drew around nine residents who were not members of either the ID-4 school board or school administration.

Two local churches share a joint Holy Week service

MIDDLEBURY — Two local Christian denominations that normally worship separately will come together in a shared religious service this Thursday.

For the 10th year, members of the Middlebury United Methodist Church and members of the Congregational Church of Middlebury will gather together at the Methodist church sanctuary off Seminary Street for a combined Maundy Thursday service.

City OKs farmers' market despite concern

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 12 meeting approved the city’s farmers’ market request to use the downtown green for another season, but not without some discussion triggered by the proposed inclusion of a pizza maker among the market’s vendors.

City Manager Mel Hawley first raised the issue that such a vendor might conflict with existing downtown eateries.

Vergennes eyes land for police

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 12 meeting said they would like to retain the better of two building sites on a city-owned 8.13-acre parcel off New Haven Road as a possible future home for a new police station.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes has also been interested in the parcel, which was owned by the Vergennes ID school district and deeded to the city in 2010 when the ID board was dissolved per a citywide vote.

FairPoint to talk in Goshen about broadband coverage

GOSHEN — On Thursday evening, Goshen residents will meet with representatives of FairPoint Communications to address bringing broadband Internet access to the tiny mountain town.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Goshen Town Hall.

While former Gov. Jim Douglas made high-speed Internet access a priority of his administration, with the goal of covering the entire state by the year 2010, the only current option for Goshen residents is to connect to the Internet via dial-up service.
