Vermont historic sites offer free admission this Wednesday

MONTPELIER — Wednesday, Aug. 16 is a Vermont State Holiday commemorating Bennington Battle Day and our victory over the British on Aug. 16, 1777. To celebrate this Revolutionary War victory, admission is free this Wednesday to the Bennington Battle Monument, Chimney Point (Addison), Mount Independence (Orwell), President Calvin Coolidge (Plymouth), and Justin Morrill (Strafford) State Historic Sites.

Pack the picnic basket, grab the kids, invite your friends and neighbors, and head out to enjoy the great Vermont summer at any of the state-owned historic sites.

Middlebury bridges work winds down

MIDDLEBURY — Construction crews are now finishing up work on the newly installed temporary rail bridge on Merchants Row, and downtown traffic is expected to return to normal on Friday, Aug. 12.

It was in June that crews began installing temporary rail bridges on Merchants Row and Main Street as a precursor to a $52 million project to replace the two 1920s-era spans with a concrete tunnel. That big project will begin next spring.

Local addiction treatment options expand: Services growing in three area towns

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County will soon see a substantial expansion of Medication Assisted Treatment services for locals who are addicted to narcotic painkillers. That treatment — which includes the prescribing of Suboxone — is now being offered in Middlebury and will soon take root in Vergennes.

And leaders of Mountain Health — a Federally Qualified Health Center in Bristol — confirmed that beginning next month it also will dispense Medically Assisted Treatment, known as MAT.

Study committee recommends $35M renovation for Mt. Abe

BRISTOL — Monday night the Mount Abe Renovation Committee voted to recommend bringing a $35 million renovation bond to voters this coming November. The committee’s recommendation now goes before Addison Northeast Superintendent Patrick Reen and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union board for official consideration.

If voters agree to fund the bond payments, construction to overhaul the nearly 50-year-old Bristol school building would begin the summer of 2019.

Mini donkey contest kicks off Field Days

NEW HAVEN — As the sun shone down on the opening day of the 2017 Addison County Fair & Field Days, several miniatures donkeys earned class titles and one became overall champion. But ascertaining which deserved the crown was not as easy as it might seem.

“It’s a lot harder (to judge) donkeys because when they get into their stubborn or scared streak they don’t always walk as straight as they normally would,” said Kathy Kennett, this year’s judge.

Orwell farm gets corn harvest to pop: Stonewood expands popcorn production

ORWELL — Best known for its holiday turkeys and year-round frozen turkey sausage, Stonewood Farm is experimenting with something new.

Popcorn.

“We’ve been fooling around with it off and on for 10 years on a small scale, just for home use,” said Paul Stone. “Two, three years ago we got serious about it and grew an acre and started selling it at the (Middlebury Natural Foods) Co-op. So now we’re up to 3.5 acres this year.”

Bristol leaders say 'no' to gun ordinance

BRISTOL — Members of the Bristol selectboard unanimously rejected a proposed gun ordinance at their meeting this past Monday, agreeing that the proposal would do nothing to prevent irresponsible gun ownership and may create more of a liability for the town.

“Throw it out. It’s completely unnecessary,” Selectman Ted Lylis said at the meeting, attended by about a dozen people. “It has just resulted in an extremely divisive situation. I don’t see the need for it.”
