Sewage violations at Button Bay State Park

FERRISBURGH — The state agency in charge of Vermont parks last week admitted to two violations of its sewage treatment and disposal system permit at Button Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh and one violation of its permit at Lake Carmi State Park in Enosburg Falls. The violations occurred in summer 2014.

Two locals earn 'Master Angler' distinction for their fishing prowess

RUTLAND — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department late last month released its annual Master Angler program report and 35 Vermont anglers have garnered “Master Angler” status for 2015. Among those named Master Angler were a Middlebury man and a Ferrisburgh youth.

MUHS students place second in Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School team turned in a strong performance at the Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl state championships held Saturday, March 26, at the University of Vermont. The Tigers won five straight before finally losing a close match to Burlington in the final round.

Competing for Middlebury’s varsity team under Coach Perry Lessing were senior Elias Wyncoop and juniors Josh Bechhoefer, Dace Eaton, Henry Ganey and Ronan Howlett.

Porter officials ready for new chapter

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials last week publicly apologized for what they acknowledged have been almost 10 months of internal strife within the hospital, and urged physicians, nurses, staff and patients to help them turn the page to a new chapter in the organization’s 91-year history.

Bristol case sparks sex offender questions

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs wants to change state law so that local law enforcement can’t be left out of the loop when a registered sex offender moves into their community.

In early March, Gibbs learned that a registered sex offender had been living in Bristol since early October without his police department’s knowledge. State law requires that offenders notify the Department of Public Service and the Sex Offender Registry when they move, said Gibbs, but not local law enforcement.

Honey flavors result from bees' changing landscape

As spring approaches, the sun is climbing higher each day and I know that it won’t be long until my honeybees are out seeking nectar and pollen.

From early-blooming red maple trees. Then sugar maples, apple trees, dandelions. From blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. From clover, staghorn sumac, and basswood trees. From milkweed in the abandoned field. From the coneflowers, thyme and sage in our perennial garden. From asters and goldenrod; jewelweed and Japanese knotweed. For a bee, the warmer seasons are a Mardi Gras parade of nectars.

Advocacy group to use pinwheels as childhood symbol

By providing a safe and comfortable space, children and their families can be assured that they are being taken care of as they manage their way through the criminal justice process.
